Empowering Dreams, Building Futures

Shitungu: A Village United Against Hunger and Poverty

The challenge of making a wise choice is a luxury most of us take for granted. What to eat? Which school to attend? For the people of Shitungu, Kenya decision making is simplified because their options are few or non-existent. Fortunately, the village members have found strength in unity. Their deep commitment to cooperation and community well-being drives their actions.

With your support, KVEO (Kenya Village Empowerment Organization) will continue to assist this resilient community in their journey towards basic self - sufficiency. Right now, two urgent priorities drive our efforts: food and education.

Harvest: Stave Off Hunger

Hunger, a persistent threat, is confronted daily. The Shitungu community garden will be harvested at the end of August, offering some relief from the increasing cost of food.

To avoid the crushing costs of food at the local markets and extreme seasonal weather, the villagers have initiated vertical gardening. Their early attempts are showing promising results. Using locally available and often recycled materials for containers, the community is building protected gardening areas that promise to be productive during drought and rainy seasons.

While this project takes root, KVEO continues to provide a monthly food stipend to help meet basic nutritional needs. A donation of just $5 would supplement the diet of villager for a month -assuring that each of the 120 villagers has more than one meal a day.

Education: Seeds for Change Education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. This basic truth is obvious to the members of this community. Their desire for education is resolute.

Unfortunately there is no free public education in Kenya. Despite the families in Shitungu doing their part—producing soap twice a month, working as day laborers, in their gardens and mining in the local quarry to generate income-  they were unable to completely meet the cost of tuition for the school age children. Due to government limitations, the families did not receive any tuition assistance. With your help, KVEO can assure that 46 children can return to school and complete future sessions.

Meet the Need

We understand that giving looks different for everyone. Please contribute however much works in your budget. Every donation makes a huge difference. Whether it’s $5 or $500, your donation will go directly toward fighting hunger and funding education in Shitungu.
