The Power of Hard Work and Hope
An Update from KVEO and the Village of Shitungu
Dear Friends,
Even in difficult times, the people of Shitungu continue to show us the power of resilience and community.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) closed its doors on July 2nd and other foreign aid has also been cut. Though Shitungu was not directly receiving funds, the ramifications of those cuts and the political turmoil in Kenya have triggered a sharp rise in food prices, severely reduced health care services and deepened poverty.
And yet hope thrives in Shitungu.
With the small profits from the sale of soap and income received from other labor a few families were able to purchase a hen or even a goat. These welcome additions are a step towards increased food security and self sufficiency.
More families are engaging in the vertical gardening project to expand their food independence. Villagers are collecting used jerry cans and other local materials to establish gardens that can survive extreme weather conditions. The reality of expanding the farming season is taking hold.
Harvesting season is short. With your support, KVEO continues to send monthly funds for food to make sure that families can stretch their resources and provide two meals a day for most of the month. These gifts provide immediate relief and help keep hope alive and stomachs full. Please keep this momentum going: visit KVEO.org and donate today.
