Empowering Dreams, Building Futures

October 30, 2025

Dear Friends of KVEO;

This update letter is filled with great examples of how big benefits come from small investments. The modest and consistent support from KVEO donors has been the catalyst for successful actions taken by the Shitungu community. Your generosity has not only helped meet immediate needs but has allowed villagers to make wise decisions and develop projects that strengthen long-term economic stability.

Thanks to your support, progress is slow and steady.

SHITUNGU RISES!

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

With relief from the constant struggle to simply survive, many families are now able to own and care for animals that contribute directly to their economic stability. These animals strengthen food security by providing both nourishment and income.

CLEAN FUEL PROJECT

Shitungu has embarked on a new, green fuel project. Villagers are producing charcoal briquettes by recycling charcoal dust purchased from vendors at a minimal price and mixing it with cowdung.

This recycled product is sustainable and replaces reliance on wood for fuel. Deforestation will be reduced and a healthier environment will result. The community is committed to a green future.

SOAP PRODUCTION

Shitungu has a new building that is dedicated to the growing soap production.

Designed to contain shelving units and safety measures, the building will meet the production standards of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requirements for cottage industry operations.

The income generated by the production and sale of soap has allowed families to reinvest in the purchase and maintenance of animals, vertical gardening and other avenues of economic independence.

CHALLENGES REMAIN

Healthcare

Access to healthcare has become more scarce and expensive. (The closest health facility is about 5 miles away.) Monthly health care subscriptions - similar to insurance - have been reduced in value and often do not cover the needed healthcare. When the needed care is not covered, service is denied if cash payment is not made.

KVEO has helped stock a basic first aid center that is of great help to the villagers but not a substitute for medical care. KVEO has established a medical reserve fund with the community to assist in covering the cost of medical emergencies.

Education

University lecturers remain on strike. though college classes are in session. This shutdown impacts young scholars across the country and impedes their hopes for a brighter future.

CHALLENGES REMAIN

Your continued partnership assures zero hunger, supports education, and hastens the community’s goal of economic empowerment and self-sufficiency.

Every contribution — no matter the size — makes a real and lasting difference.
