Dear Friends;
Extreme weather patterns are evident everywhere, including in Shitungu. Despite not having running water or electricity beyond a small solar battery (provided by KVEO), the villagers are deeply committed to act in ways that do will advance environmental sustainability.
In the past few years, Shitungu has experienced both floods and prolonged seasons of drought to heavy rains. The community’s proactive response to climate change has been to create sustainable projects that protect their land. These efforts include planting trees, vertical gardening and producing briquettes made of dung and ash in order to replace reliance on trees.
The newest environmental project has involved the village children of all ages. Using recycled plastic bottles, they have constructed sturdy fences designed to contain their chickens and other livestock.
The joy from ‘learning by doing’ is evident in the photos below.
