Holiday Tree Lighting Guide: Keeping Your Trees Healthy and Bright

As the holiday season approaches, decorating trees with festive lights is a cherished tradition. But for those who want to enjoy the beauty of illuminated trees without compromising the trees’ health, there are some essential tips to follow. At Arbor Experts, we believe that holiday magic can go hand-in-hand with responsible tree care. Here’s our certified arborist guide on how to light your trees with care.

1. Choose the Right Lights

  • Opt for LED Lights: Not only are LED lights more energy-efficient, but they also emit far less heat than incandescent bulbs. Excess heat can stress a tree's bark and foliage, especially if lights are left on for long periods.

  • Use Miniature Lights for Smaller Trees: Large bulbs can be too heavy for younger or smaller trees, potentially damaging delicate branches. Lightweight, miniature lights are a gentler option that are less likely to overload the branches.

2. Mind the Installation Process

  • Avoid Nails and Staples: Nails or staples can cause injury to a tree’s bark, allowing pests and diseases to enter. Instead, use tree-friendly clips or hooks designed to attach lights without puncturing the bark. If you use ties, choose soft, flexible options and avoid wrapping them tightly around branches.

  • Keep Wires Loose: Run lights and wires loosely across the branches. Tightly wrapping branches can restrict the tree’s growth and circulation. This is particularly important on younger trees, where branches are more susceptible to damage.

3. Limit Exposure Time

  • Set a Timer for Your Lights: While it’s tempting to leave lights on all night, it’s beneficial for trees to have a period of darkness, especially young or newly planted ones. Setting lights on a timer (such as for 6-8 hours) allows trees a rest period while keeping energy costs down.

  • Take Down Lights After the Season: Don’t forget to remove lights promptly after the holidays. Leaving lights on trees year-round can constrict the tree as it grows. It can also attract pests or fungus that may harm your trees.

Happy Holidays from Arbor Experts

With a little extra care, your decorations can add holiday cheer without causing harm, letting your trees thrive through the winter and beyond.
