The Magic, Illusion & Unbelievable Truth of Youth League Sports
Looking at the culture of Youth League Sports and the relationship between adults and children is merely a microcosm of the misunderstanding adults have about what children need. The reasons why parents and coaches are miscommunicating and the impacts of these misunderstandings are exposed in this book. There are valid reasons why we have gotten it wrong for so long. There is layer upon layer of illusions illustrated within these pages that explain why it is we can not see the truth. It is as if a grand Magician is performing the perfect illusion yet the magician turns out to be us and we don't even know it.
The Magic, Illusion and Unbelievable truth details over 40 assumptions based perceptions, that cause Coaches and Parents to believe they are doing the right and the best thing for children. And the Unbelievable truth that despite the mountain of data, years of science made available to the public that proves that we are not close to doing the right or best by our children, we still due to these illusions, continue to behave in ways that do more harm than help.
This book details the history of Youth Sports, back to a time when we did do the right and best thing for children, through the period of when we changed our focus and things began to go wrong. It looks at various models used over the past 150 years of youth league sports. And it highlights the ongoing debate between specialization versus diversification.
This book contains resources from over 150 sources. Research, polls, studies, expert opinions, articles written by the leading experts in child sports interaction. These studies are backed by some of the biggest institutions in the world. From Ivy League schools to the Carnegie Insititute. Michigan State University, George Washington University, and the University of Calgary are merely three of the dozens that have public reports that were used for the making of this book. The Aspen Insititute, the Women's Sports Foundation and a number of US Goverment departments also make up much of the content of this book. This book is NOT opinion based. It is fact-based. And the unbelievable truth is that even with facts, people we still choose to do the wrong thing and even more unbelievable is that they will choose the wrong thing for their children. This shocking almost absurd truth flies in the face of how we would imagine parents behave. As parents, we want the best for our children yet, in general, we seem ill-prepared to be parents and certainly, we are misguided about how to direct our children when it comes to many areas of their life including youth sports.
The good news is that there are proven effective methods available to us, and we have many examples that go all the way back to the birth of youth sports to guide us. Today there places in the world where massive change has occurred and the results have been magical. A good kind of Magical.
So come find out what we are doing wrong and how we can do better by our children. Pick up a copy of the Magic, Illusion & Unbelievable Truth of Youth League Sports and help us change our behavior for the better.

GREATEST JOY + GREATEST CHALLENGE= MOTHERHOOD
(reposted from 5/2016)
From the moment of becoming a mother, the joy is like no other ever experienced. And so are the challenges. How can we face maternal stressors that start with labor pains? (An epidural, of course!) As Mother's Day approaches, here are some ways to increase the joy and decrease the stress that comes with being a mother:
1-Need to take care of self- We need to take care of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. We need to be our best selves to be the best for our children. It is the same as the flight attendants say, "put on your oxygen mask before you put on child." If we do not have our own "oxygen," we are cannot help anybody. Or try to imagine a cup full of water with a hole poked in the bottom. The water will eventually flow out, but if we do not replenish it, we will have nothing more to give.
2- Be present- Give full attention to children when with them. For example, one of the best opportunities to talk with our children is in the car. Even serious subjects can be discussed, because there is no interruption and no eye contact, which can make it easier for kids to talk (or confess). But then there is that cell phone that keeps ringing. Try to put the cell phone away when driving with your kids (or anytime with your kids). Use that time to talk beyond "How was school?" "Fine." "What did you do?" "Nothing." (How much are we paying in tuition?) Obviously, any time we are with our children, let's BE with our children. Show them the respect that we would like to get in return.
3- Time with girlfriends- Research shows that when women spend time together, their serotonin levels in their brains increase. What does this mean? It means Mom is in a happy mood and comes home to be with her family in a happy mood. Can you imagine how happy Mom will be after a "girls' trip?"
4- Let go (a little bit) of control- Being a helicopter parenttakes a lot of energy. Allow children to have new experiences without Mom orchestrating everything. Whether it is trying a new activity, playing with new friends, or doing their homeworkalone, they need to experience rewards and failures to learn the lessons life offers. Kids get into college even if they failed their second grade spelling test. We cannot control everything (although it would be nice), and it becomes very stressful to try to do so. Also, if mothers do not "let go" as their children need more independence, conflict and stress increase. (Always, safety first.)
5- Exercise- The benefits of exercise are numerous. As a psychologist, I suggest all my clients exercise. I refer to it as "nature's antidepressant." We feel better physically and emotionally; we maintain better health; and we are modeling a good habit for our children. Exercise decreases not only the stress of parenting, but all stress.
6- Set appropriate limits- Setting boundaries for our children provides consistency and certainty. Everybody knows what to expect, so conflict is reduced, resulting in less stress for us. It is like playing basketball without lines on the court. Not knowing where "out of bounds" is or where a "3 pointer" is to be shot will bring anxiety for the players. It is the same for us and our children. If we do not set appropriate limits, nobody knows the rules of the game and chaos occurs.
7- Work/Volunteer Outside the Home- Motherhood is just one facet of being a woman. Volunteering or working outside the home (number of hours inconsequential) gives us the opportunity to express ourselves differently and fulfill our other aspects of "self." We gain a sense of fulfillment through sharing with others and are able to use our creativity and/or training in other areas. Self-worth and self-esteem can increase through work or volunteerism, whether it is because we are able to practice a profession or skill in which we are trained or being able to share with others for a cause that is meaningful to us.This also demonstrates to our kids that caring about others outside the home or having a profession/skill (along with being a mom) is important.
8- "Just Say No or Not Now"- Saying yes to everything and everybody can add a great deal of stress. Mothers are more prone to say "yes" to their children (and just about anybody that asks them to do something) than to say "no." Many times when "no" is the more appropriate response, mothers feel guilty and children have temper tantrums, so it is often easier to just say "yes." Try saying "not now." It gives some time to actually think about the appropriate answer, and also can delay the temper tantrum.
9- Be a Team- Sharing parenting responsibilities and decision-making can also reduce stress. Even if our partner doesn't give baths or do homework as good as we do, let them participate. We get a break and also shows our kids that we are a team. Strength in numbers. Even if the other parent lives outside thehome, working as a team reduces stress and benefits thechildren.
10- Enjoy Your Time Together-
es so fast!!

Feel Good Foods & Thoughts
Nourishing palate and soul
These days it's difficult not to be affected by our surroundings. For starters, there are no more borders of time and space anywhere. We are perpetually connected to the world and all its nuances via social media and our myriad of devices. While it's exciting and informative, this new method of "staying connected" can also leave us bombarded with data overload inevitably making us live life from the outside world in.
Do we really want to constantly dance to the tune of what's going on outside of ourselves? Because if we do, we place ourselves at the mercy of a lot of ups and downs reflected in our tumultuous world. Instead, I say we remain authentic to our true selves and live life from the inside out.
Let's become the makers and shakers of our own reality and live our lives in a way that's conducive to our authenticity by pursuing our passions and sharing our gifts with the world. When we orchestrate our talents to fruition we create a world that is rewarding not only to ourselves but also to the people around us. When we live according to our intended purpose we all benefit from each other's skills thus rendering a life rich in manifested intentions regardless of the latest trends or news flashes. Now that's hashtag living worth more than a million likes.

Mother's Day Can Be A Tough Day
I love Mother's Day. For the lumpy gluten filled pancakes and the fascinating hand sketched family figures, it's all so beautiful.
Though, I didn't always love Mothers' Day. At one time in my life, Mother's Day brought me a bit of jealousy and anger. My perception of this dedicated day had me, for a few years, upset with the world and feeling envy towards those that had loving Mothers. Through my rollercoaster of emotions during my early adult years, I found grace, forgiveness and love. Editing definitions, re-telling stories and reviewing my history led me to love the day and let go of the past.
Growing up with a Mother, that was addicted to drugs and tinkering in between the world of ego and mothering, left me grasping for a maternal figure. Friends that struggle with this day, I hear ya. Whether your Mom left Earth too soon or never really "arrived" or your dreams of being one never physically occurred, the day can be filled with mixed ups and downs. My lessons learned through my path to peace is noted below. If this time is a tough one for you as well, I hope this serves as a means to heal and locate a deep level of serenity.
MATERNAL VIBES ARE EVERYWHERE // The titles of the perfect mother seem to confine love and set strict parameters. When we release titles and definitions, our hearts open to the world and help us get grounded in blessings. I found maternal love in humans that weren't a part of my family. I found I could mother others in a nurturing light regardless of biology. I found that even non-humans need mothering and once I released the capsules, I was able to share so much more. The roles of mothering are self-perspective and the soaring sensation that arrives once we realize this, gives us comfort, peace and grace to love ourselves deeply. Let go and feel the love that is in all things we touch and embrace. Internally, we have the power to love beyond any pain we have been focusing on. Start to mother all of those around you with a diversity of peace. Your soul will start to smile.
OUR PAST DOESN'T DEFINE US // Stories of women that have struggled to arrive to their place in this world are more prevalent. Each story confirms that the past doesn't dictate our future. Humans tend to look at yesterday as to why tomorrow won't be as it should. Looking back though tears, re-living painful years from long ago in the today, prevent us from moving forward with love. If we constantly re-live, re-vive and re-focus on the pains of our past years, how can the tomorrow be filled of light and love? I have healed and I now find sporadic moments I received as love during childhood and those few memories lift me up. I am choosing to see only the beautiful moments, to remember those times of love and allow those to elevate my spirit.
SHARE YOUR SHIFT WITH OTHERS // When I share my past with others, it gives them comfort. As we connect with one another in the stories that shifted us and led us to find peace, it helps others do the same. Misery likes company as they say. However, to break free from pain to embrace love, there is company craving for this therapeutic scenario as well. While we are connecting with points of painful memories, the isolation can feel incredibly personal and victimizing. We are not alone and to recognize this truth allows us to release a bit of pain and replace it with more love.
I am wishing you so much love for this Mother's day. I hope this helps those searching for clarity and a way to shift into embracing Sunday, May 13th.
