The Key Training Center was founded in 1966. You will see in one of the pictures the Key Center’s history book, highlighting its remarkable beginnings. It is truly inspiring to reflect on the individuals and organizations who were vital in establishing the Key Training Center.
Harry and Elsie Van Nortwick were the driving force behind its creation, motivated by a desire for a better future for their daughter, Marilyn. Additionally, Mr. and Mrs. Schuyler Orvis donated 40 acres of land for the future school and workshop, where we still provide services today. Robert Neale was the first Director of the Key Center. The main campus road into Lecanto was named Van Nortwick in 1968, honoring the family’s contributions. 56 years later, the Key Center continues to be recognized as the Best of the Best Non-Profit for six years in a row.
In April 1971, Chet Cole became the second executive director, bringing vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial thinking that helped the Key evolve into what it is today.
The Key’s first thrift store opened in Crystal River in the early 1960s, a model that expanded to five retail stores — four in Citrus County and one in Wildwood.
The impact of these stores on our community and the Key Center is remarkable. In 2025, approximately 1.2 million items were sold, generating sales exceeding $2.8 million.
Run for the Money started in 1976 to raise awareness and funding is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. The first Run raised around $6,000 and has now topped $6.6 million. The Run has logged over 21,533.83 miles equivalent to one lap around the US and we are working on our 2nd lap and only 3,356.01 miles of circling the earth.
In 1978, the Key received a $1.86 million HUD loan to build six homes, marking the beginning of its residential program. 60 years later, there are 18 group homes and four apartment complexes serving 145 individuals.
With the assistance of individuals, organizations, businesses, and clubs, the Key Center opened its doors, initially serving seven individuals. What began in 1966 with a small group of dedicated parents has transformed into crucial support for families in our community.
Today, we serve over 300 individuals with a wide range of day and residential services, anchored by the original values of kindness, love, dignity, and respect. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward with hope and determination. We remain dedicated to strengthening our programs, expanding access, and secure vital services for future generations.
