KACo releases one-pager on county jails plan

Kentucky county jails are at a crisis point, with fiscal court subsidies rising more than 76% in six years and counties forced to raise taxes or cut essential services just to keep their facilities operating.

Kentucky lawmakers will enter the 2026 budget session facing a projected budget shortfall—but one that is significantly smaller than earlier estimates and more manageable than initially feared according to updated revenue projections released this week.

County unemployment data for September 2025

Unemployment rates fell in 116 counties, rose in Clinton, Wayne and Ballard counties and stayed the same in Logan County between September 2024 and September 2025, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics.
