October 2013 Issue No. 30
Keylight Updates

Dear Central States Region Alliance for

Community Media Members,

Bringing about change in an uncertain environment can be a nerve wrecking endeavor. We must not be afraid to adjust to the ever changing world we live and work within.

The beginning of October 2013 brought about our annual media competition the Philo Festival of Media Arts in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which was co-hosted with Public Media Network. The media festival is a good example of our region conducting experiments with technology and management structures of how to grow over time with changing methods of doing business.

This year we partnered with region ally corporation Leightronix Inc. to host the video entries online. While there were some growing pains to using their PEGVault and PEGCentral services we appreciate the opportunity to work hand in hand with the many talented people of Leightronix on any project.

Our next regional event is the Flights of Expression conference being planned for May 1-3, 2014 in Dayton Ohio with DATV as our co-sponsor media center.

Please enjoy this newsletter to keep you informed with regional involvement.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Lord

Nonprofit News
Central States ACM Logo

Central States Region Alliance for Community Media began the process of applying with the Internal Revenue Service for a federally recognized distinction as a 501(c)6 Non-profit trade organization in November of 2012. After searching for the most fiscally efficient method the region hired Nickolas Hursh with Shambaugh, Kast, Beck, & Williams of Fort Wayne, IN on this matter.

In August 2013 region chair Elizabeth Lord received the official letter from the IRS granting that status. This puts our region, Central States, as the first region within the Alliance for Community Media to obtain independent non-profit status. This helps grant the region some financial stability and enables us to engage in our regular activities with proper legal and tax accommodations.

While a 501(c)6 status does not grant our members or contributors the ability to donate monies to the region tax free, it does enable us to be active within trade of Community Media business and have more flexibility to be active in legislative matters that affect our members.
