About the Presenter:

This year’s conference will feature keynote speaker Rick Goodwin, MSW, RSW, a Training Consultant with 1in6, Inc., a program of the Zero Abuse Project.

What is 1in6?

The mission of 1in6 is to help men who have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences live healthier, happier lives. Their mission also includes serving family members, friends, partners, and service providers by providing information and support resources on the web and in the community.

1in6 was founded in 2007 in response to a lack of resources addressing the impact of negative childhood sexual experiences on the lives of adult men, one of many under-recognized aspects of childhood sexual abuse. In 2016, they expanded their mission to include men who experienced sexual assault as adults. In 2024,they  merged with , Zero Abuse Project, a 501(c)(3) organization committed to transforming institutions in order to effectively prevent, recognize, and respond to child sexual abuse

About the Presentation:

The Emerging Face of Male Sexual Trauma in Popular Culture

Cinematic depictions of sexual trauma tell us stories, but not necessarily facts. Still, movies are often reflective of popular culture – showing us the rules of what can be said and what should stay silent. Using movie culture as a backdrop, the struggle to recognize male sexual abuse and assault in broader society will be explored.

From examples of near invisibility, victim-blaming as well as periodic “breakthroughs” that challenge the dominant discourse, this presentation will weave first-person narrative, gleanings from trauma theory and gender discourse to challenge all of us to (re)consider survivors’ truth, voice and story of male-identified individuals of all ages.
