Dear Friends and Patrons,

The Waterfront Playhouse has been bringing fantastic stories to life for
80 years, and we have certainly weathered storms, but now on the eve of
our 81st season we pause. Our hearts are with those who have been
affected by this pandemic and our heartfelt thanks goes out to those who
are working selfishly to keep us safe.

Although our season was cut short, we were able to revel in the antics of
our Youth Theater production of Shrek,jr; do the time warp in the sold
out production of The Rocky Horror Show, ‘Let the Sunshine’ in the sold
out production of Hair, go Around the World in 80 Days, hear the music
of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, experience a
world premiere with Michael Aman’s Glass and have the time of your
life with Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Thank you, thank you and thank
you! To those who did not see Priscilla, thank you for donating your
tickets back to the theater or transferring it to a gift certificate or just
giving us time to process exactly what was happening!

While shows have been cancelled, we have been busy planning what to
bring you next.

On Saturday evening, May 2 at 8pm , tune in to US Radio One for the
Waterfront Playhouse Radio Players production of The 39 Steps: A
Live Radio Play. Featuring Dave Bootle, David Black, John McDonald,
Erin Mckenna and Carolyn Cooper this radio play will be broadcast live
from the stage of the Waterfront. It will be great fun!

Our youth theater production of Disney’s Frozen, is on hold, but rest
assured you will be able to  Let It Go  later this year!

Neil LaBute’s Bash,  featuring Arthur Crocker, Belle Jampol, Lauren
Thompson and Ross Pipkin is preparing for the day we can open the
doors or live stream the production. (Don’t worry, we are playing safe).

A revival of our popular Trunk Material:  a musical review is on the
drawing table along with a fabulous season of plays and musicals to
entertain you throughout the year!
We thank you again for your support and look forward to the day we can
“See you at the theater!

We have switched to a new delivery system for the Daily Blast that requires your registration to continue receiving the Blast.
To Register please click the link:   https://konklife.com/?p=47710
For the past 30 days, all of us have experienced a virtual lock-down. It has affected every single one of us in the Florida Keys, our nation and the world. First, we at KONK Life wish everyone to be safe and healthy in these unprecedented times.

As a local newspaper, we have had to stop printing our weekly paper because of the lock-down. However, that has not kept us from delivering the news and information that you have come to rely on. For almost 4 years now our email Blast readers have learned that KONK Life delivers the top news and stories from Key West, Monroe County, Florida and the nation. We’re able to deliver additional out of county news through our affiliation with the Associated Press. We look forward to continuing to provide our readers with this valuable service for years to come.

Since the inception of the Blast, over 15,000 readers have subscribed. They read the Blast every day of the year. We developed the first local email blast and believe we have the largest subscription-base of all the local news organizations. But now we need more than readers. We need our readers to help support us in delivering the news and information you have come to depend on.

KONK Life is rolling out a new registration and subscription service. By simply registering you will have free access to 10 news stories every month. After you’ve reached your monthly limit, you will be invited to subscribe to KONK Life. initially, we are offering 2 levels of subscription. The first is an automatically recurring charge of $9 per month. Alternatively, you may purchase an annual subscription at a low introductory price of $59 per year. That’s less than $5 per month to have full access to our valuable local news and information and is more than 40% below the monthly rate.

Speaking for myself and our writers, photographers, graphic artists, office, and sales staff, we all hope you see the value KONK Life provides our community and will consider becoming a paid subscriber to our local newspaper. I thank you in advance for being a loyal reader of KONK Life. Guy deBour KONK Life Publisher [email protected]

2) Paradise” for The Studios of Key West Mango Madness show. It was so fun to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones too!
3) Tonight is about splashing bright colors on clay as the rain and thunderstorms go on outside. It’s a challenge to fire an outdoor kiln between the raindrops but some bright cheerful colors will be coming out of the kiln tomorrow!
4) Thank you for the shout out on my piece, “Atoms,” on the front page of the Citizen yesterday. I’m so humbled and excited to be part of the Art Garden at the Key West Botanical Gardens for another year!

Up Next after the May Exhibitions (Directly Below) is a NEW On-Line Course from TSKW
This Link https://tskw.org/all-exhibitions/ Will give you details on the May 2020 Exhibitions Here they are "ART STORIES" by CHRISTINE FIFER, "BEACH BODIES" by CAITLIN ALBRITTON, and "COLOR CONVERSATIONS" by JILL CALDWELL . Then Of course ; the Every Year Anticipated Summer Exhibition from TSKW Member Artists "2020 Annual Member's Show / Exhibition" in June (This Exhibition uses ALL the Space in the Building) MORE INFO DIRECTLY FROM THEIR WEBSITE (Below)
CHRISTINE FIFER'S "ART STORIES" SPONSORED BY JANE GARDNER INTERIORS
Christine Fifer’s paintings and sculptures revolve around books – their history & their contents – all woven together with puns, puzzles, and didactic intent to both amuse and encourage conversation. Still life paintings of precariously stacked first editions are simultaneously realistic and surreal, prompting extended investigation. Leaping from the canvas, Fifer’s sculptures utilize actual books suffering from wear or neglect that have been repurposed to create playful and thoughtful sculptures in search of their own Renaissance. In the Sanger Gallery.
CAITLIN ALBRITTON'S "BEACH BODIES" SPONSORED BY THE ARTIST HOUSE
Culled from her ongoing Gym Series, Albritton’s colorful, awkward, and very funny paintings ultimately offer a profound commentary on the lengths people will go to in search of the perfect body. In the XOJ Gallery
JILL CALDWELL'S "COLOR CONVERSATION" SPONSORED BY ARCHEO GALLERY & GRACE ON FRANCES. In Zabar Project Gallery

Caldwell’s mostly abstract, mixed media paintings capture the exuberance of an island bursting with color: the endless shades of green foliage, the magnificent variety of flowers, the amazing aqua-teal-turquoise water, the billowing clouds highlighted peach-pink with the last rays of sun, followed by the blue-purple-indigo of nightfall. They are made of layers of water-based paint, graphite, markers and scraps of paper, which add texture and evoke the feeling of experiences and relationships that are built over time.
MANGO MADNESS : ANNUAL MEMBER'S SUMMER SHOW (USING EVERY EXHIBITION AREA IN THE BUILDING) SPONSORED BY TEAM KAUFELT

The mango is not only a fruit best savored under a tropical sun, mingled with the sea water beading on your face. It’s not only a color that radiates joy like sunshine. It’s a metaphor for the annual bounty of our island, meant to be shared with friends and neighbors, and as such it’s the perfect symbol for our yearly summer members’ exhibition, where everyone in our amazing artistic family is invited to submit a work of art, and the results never fail to nourish the soul.

Registration: $150/$125 mbrs
Limit 8 students

Popular instructor Lothar Speer leads the first virtual Figure Drawing workshop at The Studios of Key West. This workshop will adapt Speer’s instructional goals to the virtual environment. Emphasis will be given to the principles of the classical studio practice such as placement, edges, proportion, anatomy, form, rhythm and value which provide a vigorous foundation for personal style. The students will have the privilege of drawing from a professional live model. Students will draw from direct observation of the model and receive feedback and ongoing instruction.
As an alumnus of Vienna’s National Academy of the Fine Arts and recipient of the Academy’s prestigious Johannes Fuger Medal, Lothar Speer leads his students to higher levels of self-sufficiency and visual acuity. This workshop is designed to turn every participant into their own successful teacher and fortify general drawing and design skills by providing the secrets and tricks of 500 years of European Old Master studio practice – powerful tools that have withstood the test of time. We now Continue with a New Series from the Gang at The Key West Film Festival : FLASHBACK FRIDAY

FLASHBACK FRIDAY
May 1, 2020
BURT REYNOLDS

Remember that time one of the world's biggest movie stars of all time came to Key West? We do, and you can relive that moment below.

Burt Reynolds - who still holds the record of being the number one grossing box office star for 5 years in a row (1978-1982) - graced KWFF with his presence in 2016. He was on hand to be honored with our Golden Key Award along with a a screening of "The Bandit" - a highly personal film about his former stuntman and later director - Hal Needham. Hal directed him in "Smokey and The Bandit" and their relationship was definitely complex, while cherished.

The screening featured all the bells and whistles one would expect when regaling Hollywood royalty. A limited edition replica of his Trans Am from the film was parked outside of the San Carlos Theater, and
Mr. Reynolds was escorted to the screening in an old-time police car complete with a keystone cops dressed driver.

Check out a snippet of the conversation Mr. Reynolds had with David Fear of Rolling Stone, and an interview with KWFF's Andrew Shortell.

FUN FACT: "The Bandit" is directed by Jesse Moss, whose latest film,  "Boys State,"  premiered at Sundance and sold for over $10M to a24. KWFF's Programming Director, Michael Tuckman, saw the film at Sundance and can honestly say it's the best doc he's seen this year and quite possibly one of the best of the last ten years. Along with being a US Grand Jury Prize Award Winner at Sundance, it's a sure fire lock for an Academy Award nomination.

Watch "The Bandit" on any of these platforms:

We Now Continue with the last batch of photos from the Photographic Exhibition "LA IN THE 1930s"Up Next but First an Important Announcement from WWW.HOMETOWNKEYWEST.COM

The 2020 election resource
for candidates, voters and media.
KEY WEST AND MONROE COUNTY

HOMETOWN! AGAIN UNVEILS ONE-STOP CANDIDATE
RESOURCE FOR 2020 ELECTIONS

Dear Incumbents and Candidates in the 2020 Elections,

Hometown has canceled its “Call for Candidates’ forum scheduled for April 13, at Salute. It has become a tradition to open the campaign/election cycle with this event so that incumbents, candidates and those simply “testing the waters” can speak to the voters as to proposed ideas and concepts for our vibrant community.

This year Hometown again unveils its candidate and election information resource for Monroe County voters, incumbents, candidates, the media and all those interested in good government. Remember: Hometown members are SuperVoters—they vote in every election-primary & general, making it more important than ever to take advantage of this platform.

Hometown's Design Team has developed individual candidate spaces that will offer the Hometown website visitor (voters and media) more information about you!

Hometown offers a chance for you to get your message out—we will post your photo, contact information (telephone, email address, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram info), and a short written statement (no more than 150 words) on Hometown’s website ( Hometownkeywest.com ). Hometown is also prepared to add, in light of the possible future lack of campaign rallies, Forums, Q&A Events and other voter contacts, the  posting of a three-minute video setting forth each candidate’s vision  of why he/she should be elected and what his/her views are on the most important issues facing his/her electorate.

IMPORTANT:  Please send the following information to Hometown’s computer agent: Kelli Funkhouser at  [email protected]

1.  Head Shot: High Resolution (if not already sent)
2. Email address and Telephone/Twitter –Instagram Info
3.  Address (for campaign contribution checks :-)
4.  Narrative 100 - 150 word count-to be strictly enforced--
5.  Facebook & Website link
6.  Video of Candidate Speaking-no longer than 3 minutes

Please send your video to  Ms. Funkhouser  and she will upload that to Hometown’s YouTube Channel and use that same video on the  HometownKeyWest.com  website. If you already have your own YouTube Channel and would prefer we use one of your existing YouTube videos (not exceeding three minutes), please send the URL of the page that has the video you would like.

Please keep in mind: Hometown cannot process your information if received in bits and pieces.

“It is important for voters to have access to candidate information before the Mail by Vote ballots land in voters’ mailboxes,” said Hometown Board Chairman Todd German. “Our mission is simple - Informed Voters Promote Good Government.”

It is uncertain when future events will be held prior to the primary. The primary deals in large part with contested partisan county, state and federal races to be ultimately decided in the November election. It is, however, a misnomer as to other non-partisan races such as Key West mayor and city commissioners, school board, etc—for these offices, it is the general election.

If candidates are limited in holding a pre-primary rally, and Hometown does not conduct events and forums that enable candidates to meet with and discuss issues with voters, then you, the other candidates, the voters, and the community are without the means to understand and opine on significant matters that may well alter our future.

Some candidates have already sent in a photo, contact info, and a brief statement. See for example,  Craig Cates Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez , and  Robby Majesk a . (Go to  hometownkeywest.com  and click on 2020 Elections and then click on the name of the candidate.)

DEADLINE —in order to be posted, Hometown must receive everything as soon as possible and in any event, no later than April 30. If you do not want to post everything requested or anything at all, that is your choice. Just please let us know. Thanks.

Why would you not take advantage of this?
Send in your info as listed (#1 to #6) above.

What are you waiting for?

A VERY IMPORTANT IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS DIR. OF KEY WEST ALYSON CREAN ON MAY 1, 2020

While Governor Ron Desantis’s order issued this week allows for some non-essential businesses to open under strict safety guidelines, others must wait until the next step in this phased approach.
Bars and nightclubs must remain closed. Personal services, which include hair and nail salons must also remain closed, but may sell their retail products in accordance with the restriction to 25 percent occupancy within the building. Gyms, too are to remain closed.
The order allows some restaurants to begin opening up, again with very strict guidelines. Those with certain state licenses may allow on-premises dining as long as they adopt appropriate social distancing measures and limit their indoor occupancy to no more than 25 percent of the building’s allowable occupancy. In addition, outdoor seating is permissible with appropriate social distancing. Appropriate social distancing requires maintaining a minimum of six feet between parties, only seating parties of 10 or fewer and keeping bar counters closed to seating.
The order stresses the continued recommended distance of 6 feet between individuals and no more than 10 people in a gathering.
Retail establishments may open storefronts as long as they operate at no more than 25 percent of their building occupancy. Museums and libraries fall under this same strict guideline.
The City of Key West has adopted this order, which goes into effect on May 4 th , for businesses in the City. The City’s directive for wearing facial coverings inside where there are more than 10 people remains in effect.
If the community remains cautious, it will allow this phased reopening of our economy without sacrificing public health.
If a business owner has a question about opening, please review the Governor’s Order at  https://www.cityofkeywest-fl.gov/egov/documents/1588272861_09642.pdf .

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM CITY MANAGER GREG VELIZ (4/27)
sent from Alyson Crean The City of Key West Communications Manager 305-809-1058 Cell 305-797-0417. [email protected]

For the past couple of weeks, the City of Key West has been working with local businesses to develop an outlook for our resilient recovery. Often, although staff is working feverishly, we fall short in relaying these efforts to our citizens. In troubling times, we must do better communicating and reassuring citizens that your City government is moving to restart our economy in a responsible manner.
Much like our national and state leaders, we have determined that the best way to proceed would be a phased approach. Although we are currently under a restrictive order as it pertains to businesses, we do understand the need to begin to allow our residents to resume some sense of normalcy while exercising personal responsibility and social distancing. To that end, effective Monday, April 27, 2020, the City of Key West will be opening its parks, beaches, and recreational facilities to local residents. While playgrounds and water features will remain closed for now, we hope that by easing some restrictions on public space our residents can enjoy the natural environment Key West has to offer.  Residents are encouraged to responsibly distance themselves from each other while spending time outside of their homes.
We are closely monitoring all announcements from the Governor so that we can respond in a manner that reflects the unique needs of Key West. We anticipate that we will soon have the ability to lift the closure of non-essential businesses. These businesses and their customers should expect all the protective measures currently in place at essential businesses, such as masks and enhanced sanitation, will also be necessary.
It is anticipated “non-essential” retail and personal services will be opened first with enhanced protective measures and continued social distancing where possible. However, the City’s ability to do so is dependent upon the state lifting the current stay at home order. The City will continue to collaborate with our community to be ready to open businesses when allowed to do so. Understand that the City of Key West whole heartedly supports the maintenance of the informational checkpoint in the upper keys and envision Key West’s businesses serving a local clientele in the early phases of our recovery.
We understand that these are very difficult times for our residents and that you are depending on your City Government for answers and actions. Rest assured that we are planning our actions based upon public safety and economic stability, and we will provide answers as they become available. As you know the City of Key West acted swiftly in the early days of this pandemic to ensure the safety of our residents and it is our promise that we will act in the same manner as we approach our recovery.

(First Pic) Our wonderful, talented volunteer Abigail is the mastermind behind  Gilded Peach Studio at Shakti Yoga . So far she’s raised over $1000 for SOS through her jewelry sales in just two weeks!! These funds will help us procure food for the many Monroe County families in need during this crisis.

Check out Gilded Peach Jewelry- the Gems of Generosity collection if you’re interested in supporting this local artist and our foundation. Thank you so much for all you’re doing for us, Abigail!

(2nd Pic) #TBT  to early March, when Chef Dan, Lelani, and fellow Salute staff baked lasagna and offered it for free to the public. They suggested donations to our foundation rather than taking any payment for their hard work and delicious meal. After doling out pans of lasagna, they raised $780 for SOS!! Thank you so much for your generosity towards our community and our foundation.
P.S. At the time of this fundraiser, masks were not required.

Now, there are six new symptoms to look out for.
The CDC listed getting chills, or repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or a new loss of taste or smell as new symptoms of the coronavirus.
The CDC advises these symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure to the virus. People having trouble breathing, suffering persistent chest pain, or blueish lips or face should contact their doctor.
The coronavirus has infected nearly 3 million people worldwide and killed more than 200,000.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE TDC (TOURIST DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF THE FLORIDA KEYS WWW.FLA-KEYS.COM Here is the Link to the entire message https://fla-keys.com/news/article/10795/

FLORIDA KEYS — In today’s world of coronavirus concerns, stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions, people can’t visit the Florida Keys in person. In fact, the island chain’s borders are temporarily closed to visitors. Yet while travel and personal interaction are largely at a standstill, it’s still possible to satisfy a craving for the subtropical destination.
Like so many people around the U.S. and the world, Keys residents understand that it’s safer at home right now. But their creativity and free-spirited individuality demand expression even under the current restricted conditions. In addition, those who are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife aren’t letting COVID-19 dampen their commitment to their charges.
