Moving Forward

A message from the President...

Happy Father’s Day!

I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding in these trying times! As we all realize it is not easy to keep “cool” when we do not experience our “normal”. It is a natural inclination to search for the “normal”. This of course affects PSSA’s normal mode of operations.

Given the reality of the Covid-19 virus we must change how we do some things. The Membership Meeting had been a full day of meetings, discussions, auction etc. The By-laws indicate that we need to have a Membership Meeting once a year. It does not indicate how or when. Therefore, to repeat what I expressed last month:

“The Board has been “following” the virus for the past several months. Facts are the driving force of decisions to be made. Decisions are not always easy. There are too many unknowns at this time. Given the State Guidelines the Board has decided to change the Membership Meeting on August 22, 2020 to a Conference Call /Zoom Meeting. The Business Meeting will begin at 11am. Any member who has a phone will be able to listen and participate. The PSSA awards will be announced and will be distributed to the winner by the Regional Director and the person who did the nomination. The Raffle will be held at 1:00 pm. More details will be distributed in the August newsletter.”

This is a Membership Meeting. All members will need to register on the PSSA website (July 7 – August 7). . You can indicate any questions or comments you have when you register.

The Board realizes the limitations this type of meeting has for those who have attended in the past. Attendance has been slipping over the years. Anyone who has a phone regardless of where they live and are a member will be able to participate. The Board will try to answer all questions/comments within the time limit. We will continue discussions with members as needed throughout the year.

This process is “new” so we will need patience from everyone.

Someone once told me that problems can be opportunities for improved change. You cannot have a rainbow without the rain.

The Power Sport Show Committee continues to meet. You will be kept informed of progress. Send any suggestions to Travis Mathna, Chair.

Not everyone can attend the PowerSport Show. Therefore, the Board is researching additional fund-raisers. PSSA needs all members to participate and help improve PSSA. We are looking for ideas from the members to raise funds. Donations are always welcome.

Hyner Mountain SMC

Greetings from the quarantined and socially-distanced members of the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club.

I was really hoping this whole sad pandemic and its associated lockdown would be history by now and that we could resume normal activities such as going out to eat, attending family events and meetings, etc. Sadly, that is not yet the case...

Glendale Lake SMC

The regular meeting of the Glendale Lake Snowmobile Club was called to order at 7:30pm on April 6 2020. Because of the restrictions placed by our governor the Board Of Directors decided to hold the meeting by having a video conference using “Zoom”. The virtual meeting was well attended by the Board and Officers. Much of the meeting was dedicated to trail construction and planning for when the State of PA opens up again for activities. Some brief discussions were also had about our Fall Club Picnic and sled give away. A PSSA Report was given and the meeting adjourned.

Laurel Highlands SMC

Greetings from the Laurel Highlands Snowmobile Club

During these Covid-19 times it is difficult to come up with a snowmobile topic.

However, if you are a snowmobile safety instructor there is something that is

on our minds. Last year, DCNR listed a total of 5 safety classes being taught in

the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. WHY is there only 5?????

Safety instructors think it has to do with the online safety classes being taught on the computer. You can take a class for 1-2 hours and pay $29.50 and be certified to ride a snowmobile. As instructors, we all agree the best education is in the classroom. 1 on 1 with the student is extremely important. The online class comes from the state of Texas which receives no snow.

My Favorite Place to Ride

My Favorite place to ride. Wow, this is hard because everywhere I ride in PA there is always favorite area. These areas can be to take in the view or just hear the whispering pines and smell their aroma.

But an area that stands out the most is riding the state forest trails in Huntingdon and Centre County among the Tussey Mountains. My ride usually starts with meeting a few friends in the parking lot on Colerain Rd. Within minutes of unloading we are at our first overlook where you can view several counties. Traveling along these mountain sides there are lots of majestic views. About two hours into the ride we stop at Whipples Dam State Park for a snack and restroom break. Back on the trail we travel through several straight-aways and intersections in the lowlands heading towards Alan Seeger Natural Area. I think this is another reason this area is special, due to the elevation, in the lowlands, the snow does not stay around long so you have to take advantage while it’s there.

Meet Lucinda "Cindy" Barrick

Cindy Barrick currently serves as the Region 10 Director of the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association, representing Center, Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties. She is also a member of the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club, Clinton County and currently serve on the club’s Board of Directors. Cindy is seeking election to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of PSSA. Members of PSSA can learn more about Cindy HERE in preparation for our Membership Meeting on Saturday, August 22, 2020.
