September 11, 2022 | Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
My heart overflows with gratitude for all we have to celebrate at Christ Church these days. We recently participated in our tenth baptism this year, with another ten scheduled before the end of the year (including one this week!) On Sunday we will officially welcome 50 new people into our community. I love these “welcome services” because they embody one of Jesus’ core beliefs: that there is a place for everyone at God’s table. Our Christ Church community is comprised of people who represent different ages, races, incomes, sexual orientations, and political leanings, as well as people who have been here for 30 years and those who joined during the past three weeks. Within the highly polarized culture in which we live, we, at Christ Church, aspire to be a place where everyone can belong.
This Sunday will also serve as our “Kick-Off Sunday.” In between services we will host an ice cream social and ministries fair, during which you can sign up for activities you would like to participate in for the coming year. Katie will be giving tours of our new Children’s Chapel and upstairs Sunday School space, which have been remodeled for our Montessori-based Godly Play curriculum.
Our Vestry spent this summer refining a new mission statement for Christ Church: to be a caring, accepting, and welcoming community that embodies Jesus’ love in our Capitol Hill neighborhood and beyond. Although we have plenty of work ahead of us in order to make this mission into a reality, it’s important to pause on occasion and celebrate all that we have to be thankful for. I am grateful for each of you and all that you offer to our community. I hope you can join us on Sunday!

Fellowship Opportunities & Events
Foyer Dinner Groups at CC+WP |
Foyer Dinner Groups (from the French word "foier" meaning "hearth" or "home") are a way to foster connectivity among small groups of roughly 8 parishioners who meet throughout the year for simple meals and conversation. Newcomers are invited and encouraged to join a group at any time.
There is no formal agenda, nor any assignment; we request only that each group say grace before meals. Each group will meet at least 4 times during the program year (Sept-May), typically in the home of group members, and meals are intended to be simple and shared, including the preparation; the host may provide a main course while members of the group help to round out the meal by bringing side dishes, appetizers or desserts. Please indicate interest by filling out this form by September 25.

|
Don't feel like dinner, just gathering? | We are also offering the opportunity to convene as a small group to discuss life, faith, or anything impacting you these days - either weekly or monthly. If interested, please fill this out by September 25.
|
Confirmation Opportunity! | The fall opportunity to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church will be October 15 at 10 a.m. at the Washington National Cathedral. If you have any questions, or would like to participate, please reach out to John by September 25.
|
Christ Church Choir Returns! | Please consider signing up at the Ministry Fair this Sunday, or email Richard and let us know to expect you. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. and record music for the following Sunday.
|
Soul Strolls tickets now available! | Soul Strolls is back at Congressional Cemetery! The annual twilight lantern tours highlight the history of some of our interred residents through in character actors, outdoor theater, and the ambiance that only a cemetery after dark in October can provide. Get tickets for October 14, 15, 21 or 22. Tours begin at 6 p.m. and continue in 15 minute increments until 9:30 p.m.
|
First Friday Book Group Returns! | Please join the First Friday Book Group for a discussion of Unapologetic: Why, Despite Everything, Christianity Can Still Make Surprising Emotional Sense by Francis Spufford, on October 7 at 7 p.m., via Zoom. As the author describes it, “This…is a defense of Christian emotions–of their intelligibility, of their grown-up dignity. The book is called Unapologetic because it isn’t giving an ‘apologia,’ the technical term for a defense of ideas. And also because I’m not sorry.” The full schedule of book titles for the rest of the fall and into next spring will be out soon. Questions? Contact Sandy Hussey.
|
Join us this month to discuss the best movies filmed (almost) entirely in the District of Columbia. This Friday, at 7 p.m., we will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Watergate with a discussion of All the President’s Men (1976), starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. Contact Paul Laymon with questions, or simply join via Zoom on the 9th.
|
Join us any Saturday from 9-10 a.m. for conversation and community - in person or via Zoom! Email Paul Laymon with questions.

In the past two weeks, Joe Rees and Lisa Nickerson have delivered six backpacks for Afghan refugee students in the primary grades.
Karen Wilson Román, Anne Fletcher, Sandy Hussey, Eleanor Billington, and Barbara and Del Crandall made and delivered this Sunday's supper for 20 women living in Calvary transitional housing.
The summer water campaign is over. In total parishioners provided 55 flats of water for our homeless neighbors through Shirley's Place/Everyone Home DC.
