The Story Behind League of the Lexicon
Be curious—that’s what I tell my two boys, and myself, all the time. In school, at home and in life, curiosity is a precious quality. It’s the Special Sauce that makes interesting people interesting, and smart people smarter. Curiosity makes us question and wonder, and as teachers, we recognize how a child’s intellectual curiosity can draw them into a subject and build deeper knowledge and understanding.
I invented League of the Lexicon, a quiz game about words and language, to feed and encourage curious minds. Language is infinitely fascinating, and yet we rarely stop to think about it. But do you know what the last letter to enter the alphabet was? Or why tongue-twisters twist tongues? Or why we have silent letters?
These were the questions that inspired me to create League of the Lexicon, a game that explores all corners of language, from definitions and synonyms to etymology and wordy trivia. The game was invented to entertain my two boys during Covid lockdown but went on to be the most successful word game in Kickstarter history, winner of Mensa Select’s Recommended to Play award, and, most recently, take Gold in the Mom’s Choice Awards for our Junior Edition.
Beautifully illustrated, exhaustively researched and packed with fascinating nuggets of linguistic knowledge, League of the Lexicon is a game to inspire curious minds and encourage a lasting love of language.
