TONIGHT!

Grill + Chill on the lawn

Join us on the front lawn tonight for another installment of our beloved Grill + Chill! We have burgers, dogs, and brews as usual - bring a side and dessert to share. Friends and neighbors welcome. During this busy back-to-school time, take making dinner off your list! See you there.

Acolyte Training

Calling all kids aged 8 and older! Join the group of acolytes who help to lead our worship service each Sunday. Step one? Attend our casual training during the first part of tonight's Grill + Chill - from 5-6 p.m.

Sunday Morning Worship:

Kick-off Sunday + New Member Welcome

Join us at 9 a.m. or 11 a.m.* this Sunday in our historic sanctuary to worship in community. We are thrilled to be kicking off our program year with a warm welcome to 30 new members! Get to know them a little better here.

We hope to see you at whatever service fits your schedule this weekend.

*11 a.m. service also live-streamed. By entering the church at 11 a.m., you consent to being filmed, as well as its release as desired by CC+WP. More information linked below.

Additional worship information & livestream links here.

Fellowship Hour Festivities

So much to do during this week's 10 a.m. fellowship hour! First, join us in the parish hall as we bid farewell to our deacon, the Rev. Martha Jenkins. While you're waiting for a few remarks, check out the white board to learn more about programming this year, and sign up for a small group, choir, children's ministry, outreach and more.

Then, kids and adults, head to the courtyard for a quick snapshot that can be used in Sunday school (kids) and the online directory (adults). That photo is also your ticket to snag an ice cream treat from our cart! (Factor a sugar high into your Sunday plans...)

Children's Ministry

Nursery Care is available as usual from 8:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in the nursery off of the parish hall, and Children's Chapel is on during the 9 a.m. service.

Sunday School resumes next week, and Youth Groups soon after!

CC+WP Events & Updates

News about church-led events & updates!

Welcome to Erin Bowers!

We are thrilled to welcome Erin Bowers to our community as a seminarian, beginning next Sunday, September 15. A biochemist by trade, Erin works as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and just started her first year at General Theological Seminary. She lives in Petworth with her husband, Jason, and two silly cats. Outside of work and church, she enjoys powerlifting and reading epic fantasy novels.

New Adult Forums on deck

On September 15 and 22, we will be joined by the Rev. James W. Farewell, Ph. D., Professor of Theology and Liturgy at Virginia Theological Seminary and The General Theological Seminary. Dr. Farwell has decades of experience as a priest and teacher and has written several books on liturgy (a fancy term that describes the church’s public worship of God.) These two Sunday sessions are being coined “Episcopal 101” and “Liturgics 101,” and Dr. Farwell will explore and explain what makes our beliefs and practices unique. Why do we say certain prayers when we do? Which is more important, the sermon or communion? What makes Episcopalians different from Methodists or Presbyterians? Please join us in the conference room at 10 a.m. for what are sure to be two entertaining and informative sessions!

20s/30s Happy Hour next Weds.

It's been a few months since we gathered for Happy Hour, so please join us next Wednesday, September 11, from 5:30-7pm at Mr. Henry's! Come have a drink and a bite of food on us, and spend time getting to know some of the other young adults at our church. Please let Rev. Winnie know if you can attend!

Small Group Sign-up

Beginning this fall, a number of small groups will meet monthly through the program year. Some will be formed around certain affinities or commonalities and others will be more general. The goal of all of these groups is for people to get to know one another better and enjoy time engaging in conversation about their lives and spirituality. Please complete this form by September 15 if you're interested in joining one of our groups!

Attention Singers!

The Christ Church Choir begins its singing season right after Labor Day, and all are welcome! It's a great way to share your musical gifts with your church. We rehearse Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:15 p.m., warm-up Sundays at 10:15 a.m., and sing at the 11:00 a.m. service. In addition to learning wonderful sacred music, there is an unmistakable element of fellowship with monthly post-rehearsal celebrations of birthdays and other life events. Please consider joining us. Let us know you're coming or get more information by emailing Music Director Richard Thibadeau.

Outreach Partnerships

Help us help our neighbors through these outreach opportunities!

Stats from the summer of EHDC!

Thank you SO much for your support of our partner, Everyone Home DC, this summer. In addition to the 100 hygiene kits packed in July, Christ Church donated 70 pallets of water (that's roughly 1,400 bottles!) to Shirley's Place, EHDC's day center. You also raised $4,590 in support of their back-to-school campaign. Many, many thanks go to Robbie Curry, Alan Dinsmore, Barb & Del Crandall, John Billington, and Deb Hodge for delivering water, and to all of you who donated to our Outreach fund!

New donation recipient through October!

Any funds donated to the Outreach fund through the end of October will go to our partner, Good Neighbors Capitol Hill, for their work resettling refugees in the area.

Community Fellowship Group Updates

Comprised of parishioners as well as other Capitol Hill neighbors, the below groups offer opportunities to engage with our neighbors around shared interests.

Friday Night Film Group

Join us via Zoom this Friday, September 6, at 7 p.m. to discuss West Side Story (2021), directed by Steven Spielberg. That night won’t be like any night. With questions, contact Paul Laymon or Ellen Psychas

Sermon Spotlight

In her farewell sermon to our community, hear the Rev. Martha Jenkins remind us that it's not what you do, but why you do it - and from what internal space it springs - that matters.

Past sermons are always on our website.
