January Greetings NENSA Community!

WOW, is all I have to say about the US women's sprint finishes this past weekend in Dresden! Our congratulations to New Englanders Sophie Caldwell and Julia Kern for their fantastic races ~ full recap and photo finish photos below.

With lots more snow in the forecast for this coming weekend our venues will have great conditions for our upcoming events (albeit some potential tricky driving...thank goodness for my Nokian snow tyres!) This coming weekend we have NENSA's New England Women's Day on Sunday 1/20 in Waterville NH, the Silver Fox Trot (including BKL races) is on Saturday 1/19 at Rikert in VT, and the 46th Annual Geschmossel Classic ski race is on Monday 1/21 at Bretton Woods NH.

Our next Eastern Cup weekend, which is combined with a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Supertour, in Lake Placid NY is next weekend January 25th, 26th and 27th. Friday will be a Supertour race day only; Saturday a combined EC & Supertour classic SPRINT race day; and Sunday will be the combined EC & Supertour classic Mass Start race day. Register now on SkiReg.com. Please note: There is no DOR for that EC/Supertour weekend ~ on-line registration closes next Wednesday 1/23 at 5pm sharp.

Looking ahead, next Saturday 1/26 is the White Mountain Classic 30k in Jackson NH which is also NENSA One Day Club Championship! Be sure to get all your club members registered because in this 1DCC everyone has the opportunity to score points for their teams in each of their respective age groups, so the more club members you can get to race, across all age groups, the better! (see box below)

Check out all the NENSA NEWS from the Field below, as well the great winter races and events in our events calendar at the bottom of this eNewletter.

I am off to the EISA UNH Carnival, then Woman's Day, then the Geschmossel - hope to see you out on one of those snowy trails this weekend!

Best,
Amie

World Cup News:
Caldwell & Kern Fourth In Dresden Team Sprint ~ Photo Finish
and
Caldwell Fifth in Dresden City Sprints
The Team Sprints
In a race where the second, third and fourth place teams all had the same official time, the U.S. team of Sophie Caldwell (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) and Julia Kern (Waltham, Mass.) placed fourth in the FIS Cross Country World Cup team sprint in Dresden, Germany, Sunday 1/13. Sweden II and Norway were the other nations in the same time with Norway edging out the U.S. for third. The race was won by Sweden I, with Sweden II in second.
“That was a super fun day out there,” said Caldwell. “Julia skied amazingly, and it was so cool for our team to be right in the mix. I tried to pace myself to catch the top three teams at the beginning of my last leg because I didn’t want to implode, and once I caught them, I tried to conserve as much energy as possible.
“I learned from yesterday that it’s better to be patient than be out on your own fighting the wind, so I gave one big final push in the finishing stretch and unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough for the podium,” Caldwell added.

Caldwell Fifth in Dresden City Sprints
Sophie Caldwell (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) skied two very smart sprint heats, setting her up for a fifth-place finish in the FIS Cross Country World Cup Dresden city sprint Saturday 1/12. The podium was swept by Sweden led by Stina Nilsson, Maja Dahlquist in second and Jonna Sundling in third.

In the semifinals, Caldwell rounded the final turn in the first lap towards the back but jumped on the Swedish train of Nilsson and Sundling moving up the outside to finish second for the heat, qualifying for the finals.

“Today was a long, flat course with a big headwind as you headed out of the stadium each lap, so my strategy was to conserve energy for the first lap and try position myself well with fresh legs for the second lap,” said Caldwell. “This worked quite well in my quarter and semi, but in the final, I was bopping around not quite in the draft at the beginning of the second lap and definitely lost my legs a bit for the last half of the lap.”

Also qualifying for the women was Julia Kern (Waltham, Mass.), skiing in her first World Cup of the season. Kern, along with D Team members Hannah Halvorsen (Truckee, Calif.) and Hailey Swirbul (Anchorage, Alaska) are in Dresden on their way to the U23 Championships beginning later in January.
