July Greetings NENSA Community~

NENSA continues to roll out our annual NENSA Awards this month ~ Congrats to Pennie Rand for being named the recipient of the 2019 NENSA Chummy Broomhall Volunteer Award! See full story below.

The NENSA High Peaks Cyclery Rollerski Series, presented by SkiTrax, kicks off in just one month with The App Gap Challenge on Saturday August 3rd. The first 100 registrants receive a FREE 10th anniversary (wicked cool) App Gap t-shirt. Do not delay, register TODAY on SkiReg.com . We will have the usual open and masters waves, as well as a new touring wave this year! Ever wanted to ski up the App Gap, on a closed road?? Here is your opportunity! After the racing and touring are done, there will be a BBQ, live BAND, and beer (thank you Lawson's) at the Mad River Glen base lodge, just down the hill from the finish. What a great way to spend a summer day ~ we hope you can join us. We are also looking for volunteers - if you can help us out, please let us know.

Lots more info and great stories below, including Great Glen hosting the 2020 BKL Festival, the 2021 Championship Event sites announced, and, US Ski & Snowboard's World Cup selection criteria (in case you were wondering how our talented US cross country athletes got selected to race in the World Cups!)

Be sure to check out the full summer (and fall into winter) calendar below ~ there is something for everyone, and more being planned everyday!

Wishing you all a safe and happy 4th of July holiday !
Best,
Amie

The 2019 NENSA Chummy Broomhall Award Recipient is...Pennie Rand!
NENSA is thrilled to announce Pennie Rand as the 2019 recipient of the Chummy Broomhall Award. This award honors Chummy, who was the Chisholm Ski Club leader for nearly 70 years, a two-time Olympian, and a builder of the race courses for Squaw Valley, Lake Placid and Black Mountain. He embodied the spirit of being a volunteer as he was a man who gave his time to generations. NENSA proudly presents this annual award to honor the unsung heroes of ski racing.

This year, NENSA would like to honor Pennie Rand, of Richmond VT, for her limitless enthusiasm for our sport of cross country skiing, and her support to our NENSA programing and athletes, of every age.

Pennie infuses enthusiasm with everything she does – from founding and organizing five editions of the exciting Cochran’s Nordic Ski Cross, to making wild flower crowns for the winners of the annual App Gap Challenge rollerski race (and serving on the timing crew), to attending countless NENSA, EISA, and community events — LL Bean Adirondack pack on her back, camera in hand, and cheering as loudly as she can for each and every competitor!

2020 New England Bill Koch League Festival
We’re so excited to announce that the New England Bill Koch League Festival will return to  Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center  on February 29 and March 1, 2020!

Great Glen hosted the Festival in 2016 with the theme of “White Mountain Magic,” a celebration of the wonder of being out enjoying the natural world in winter. The theme of this year’s festival will be  Superheroes!  which will be a celebration of the inherent superpowers that exist in all of us—skiers, coaches, and parents alike. There are already some "super" fun things in the works for the festival, and we can't wait to share another awesome weekend of skiing with the greater BKL community!

Lodging information can be found  HERE . Stay tuned for more detailed event information as we get closer to the event, and be on the lookout for registration to open up in the fall via SkiReg.
NENSA 2021 CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT
SITES ANNOUNCED
NENSA is excited to announce the host sites for the 2021 U16 Eastern Championships and Eastern High School Championships!

The 2021 U16 Championships will be held at Fort Kent Outdoor Center in Fort Kent, ME on March 12 – 14, 2021. FKOC did an amazing job hosting this past year’s Eastern High School Championships and we are happy to be working with them again on U16s in 2021.

Eastern High School Championships will be held at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington, Maine on March 19 – 21, 2021. Hosted by the Farmington Ski Club, we’re excited to be holding EHSC in 2021 at the “Friendliest Mountain Around!”

This year we bid two years in advance for our Championship Events, so the 2020 events are already scheduled and announced. As a reminder: U16s in 2020 will be held at Mountain Top Inn & Resort in Chittenden, VT, and EHSC will be held at Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY.
SafeSport Program
NENSA has always urged ALL New England coaches, parent volunteers, venue volunteers and anyone working with youth to take the SafeSport on-line course and get certified. NENSA has been requiring this of all our staff and volunteer coaches and wax techs at JN's and REG Camps for several years now. Please take time this season to be sure all your club volunteers and coaches are SafeSport certified. Do it today. Go to: https://www.safesport.org

Further information on SafeSport, and important updates made as of 4/15/19 to the SafeSport Program, can be found on our NENSA website HERE

2019-20 Cross Country World Cup Team
Selection Criteria

Dear Cross Country Ski Racing Community,

We’ve just posted an updated and final version of the World Cup Selection Criterion for 2019-20, which captures recent calendar changes in the SuperTour and World Cup schedules, and it can be found HERE

This criterion was created by a working group that included 8 senior club coaches, the Chair of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Cross Country Sport Committee, 2 non-active U.S. Ski & Snowboard Athlete Representatives, and 4 of the U.S. Ski Team coaches, including myself. The criterion was then reviewed and approved by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Cross Country Sport Committee.

Here are some of the main ways in which this year’s selection criterion differs from past criteria:
• We have a special selection for the Sprint Tour in Quebec City and Minneapolis. Our quota for this Tour will be 15 men and 15 women.
• We have a special selection for the World Cup Finals in Canmore. Our quota for this event will also be 15 men and 15 women.

We are excited for these extensive racing opportunities in North America and relish the opportunity for so many USA athletes to start in these events. We feel this criterion will do a great job of selecting the right athletes to represent the USA in World Cup competition.

If you are an athlete or a coach that is impacted by these criterion, and you have any questions or concerns about it, please feel free to contact me directly. My contact info is below.

Sincerely,
Chris Grover

From Capitol Region Nordic Alliance Club ~
Looking for and calling on all Clubs that offer
Adaptive/Paralympic Winter Sports

Individual organizations often join together to form a greater singular entity that creates a greater impact on not only those it serves but to achieve greater capacity to serve more. Organizations like NENSA achieve that in addition to many other goals established by its BoD and Executive Director. Capitol Region Nordic Alliance is looking to gather information and resources from the individual clubs all around New England now offering paranordic and adaptive programming within their capabilities.
Conversations between various clubs and athletes are focusing on reviving the network consortium of paranordic/paralympic clubs to do such wonderful collaborative programming initiatives as:
  • Share equipment (sitskis, nordic rental equipment, biathlon, snowshoes, timing equipment, etc)
  • Develop and share staff for clinics, camps, regional/national events etc.
  • Implement a series of training/competition events supporting both NENSA Adaptive as well as US Paranordic
  • Develop and implement a strategy to have financially healthy and growing adaptive programs and venues throughout New England
  • Work with NENSA, CXC, US Paranordic, WPNS and above all to offer those with disabilities/special needs the same opportunities to be joyful on snow
If you and your club are interested in exploring how New England Adaptive Nordic can be as prominent and important as it can be, please contact Russ Myer, Executive Director, Capital Region Nordic Alliance at russmyer08@gmail.com , 315-396-9967
Once gathered, NENSA will also list these Adaptive Resources on their NENSA.net website.
