At Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area, we are taking all of the lessons we learned during this past year and using them to create a worry-free summer Club Experience. "Hakuna Matata" will be our "problem-free philosophy" as we finish up this very unique school year.

BGCDA's partners have made our mission UNSTOPPABLE. We have taken time to celebrate and recognize the academic achievement of all of our Club Members as they finish up their grade level and transition to the next phase of their youth. Life-long learning and academic success are important focus areas for Clubs. Our staff and volunteers have worked creatively to make this year as fun and engaging as possible.

We are grateful to our community partners, Club and special event sponsors, Board members, and parents who continue to give us all the resources we need to build GREAT FUTURES for our youth.
From Emily Broyles, Club Staff working with Latedred:

"When I heard that Latedred had brought his grades up to passing, I was extremely proud. His accomplishment is a testament to his own hard work and dedication outside of any of my own efforts. Of the students I've worked with individually, he is the most intrinsically motivated to complete his assignments, takes personal responsibility to log on for virtual classes, and avoids distractions to remain engaged during this lessons.

My primary role in his success was simple to provide an opportunity for him to learn in a more individualized environment with fewer distractions from other students completed virtual learning. Since I had fewer students to supervise, I was able to work with Latedred one-on-one to complete assignments or discuss concepts he was having difficulty with.

This experience helped me to develop the skill of meeting a student where they are in the learning process in order to determine the best way to help them strengthen their understanding and succeed academically--for all of this, I am extremely grateful."
Club Member Highlight:
Latedred Thomas

When Latedred first started day support at BGCDA, he seemed to be distracted by the activity of others around him. A couple of times, staff found him sleeping while his sessions were taking place.

Latedred was never a problematic child, however, it was obvious that he needed additional support throughout the day at Club. Staff met with his mother to better understand his experience and academic performance and together, we made the decision to move him into a smaller group. Within a couple of months, his mother reported that his grades improved from failing to A-B honor roll! Her energy had greatly changed in regards to how felt about her son's future in our Club programs.

Our GREAT staff at BGCDA did our best to give Latedred what he needed during our Virtual Learning Club year.

It gives us a great honor to recognize Isaac Farmer as the 2021 Youth of the Year for BGCDA. Isaac is a senior at Dan River High School and will be attending Virginia State University in the fall, majoring in Sports Medicine.

Youth of the Year is the Club's premier leadership recognition program and the highest achievement that can be received by a Club Teen. Each year, one exceptional youth is selected at BGCDA to serve both as an ambassador to the Club and a strong voice for youth in our community.

Isaac has been a Club member since he was six years old. He has completed over 100 community service hours, worked as a Club mentor and Junior Staff. Isaac plays football, basketball, runs track for Dan River, and still finds time to volunteer in the community. He has volunteered for Pittsylvania Parks and Rec, NABCJ Basketball Camp, Danville VA 4-H, and many more events and organizations. We are so excited for what lies in store for Isaac!

Business Investment Spotlight:
J.M. Huber Corporation

J.M. Huber Corporation (Huber) recently awarded a grant of $75,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area for its BGCDA Teen Center Renovation project.

The grant was part of Huber's global commitment and initiative - called Huber Helps - to donate 1% of its net income annually to philanthropic causes around the world. The company specifically focuses on environmental, housing, education and humanitarian causes as part of its strategic approach to community engagement and philanthropy.

Huber employee, Drew Robertson, Inventory Manager & CMMS Administrator at Huber's Crystal Hill, VA location, submitted an Impact Your Community funding application on behalf of BGCDA in October, 2020. The submission was one of several globally that was approved for funding in 2021.

The Impact Your Community funding program is one component of Huber Helps that invites employees to apply for funding that can be used to contribute to projects that can benefit a community for multiple years or generations. The goal is to support projects that offer Huber the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in communities around the world where Huber operates. BGCDA was one of eight organizations internationally chosen for the Impact Your Community grant.
Projects were evaluated on the following criteria:
1) provides multi-year benefits to the community
2) organization has a robust governance structure and is a registered charity or its equivalent in its jurisdiction
3) multiple Huber employees can volunteer or get involved with the project

BGCDA is extremely grateful to Huber for awarding this grant. While these funds are utilized to renovate our Teen Center, the excitement will far outweigh the challenges faced due to the pandemic. The project will be a reminder to remain grateful throughout 2021, and beyond. At BGCDA, we cannot say thank you enough to Huber for believing in
our mission!
