Spotlight on Isaac Juma - Automotive Instructor, Mount Tahoma High School - Tacoma, WA
Isaac brings 25 years of experience to the classroom and runs the only automotive program remaining in the Tacoma School District. His passion for teaching comes from his love of mentoring others, and he consistently advocates for his students' success. Students leave with ASE entry-level certifications and regularly continue their education at Clover Park and Bates Technical Colleges. Isaac's dedication to developing skilled technicians makes a lasting impact on our industry, and his contributions are truly appreciated.
| | | | |
1. How long have you been in the automotive field?
- I spent 6 years in the military performing maintenance, 8 years in industry and contracting, and 11 years teaching at Mt. Tahoma High School.
2. What inspired you to teach inspiring technicians?
- I started teaching 11 years ago. The desire for teaching came when I started to notice that I was instructing other technicians on how to fix or repair vehicles. I realized how much I enjoyed that, so when the opportunity came to teach in High School, I jumped at the chance.
3. What makes your automotive program unique or special?
- My program is the only one left in the Tacoma School District. We are where to come if you want or need the next crop of inspiring technicians. Students learn basic MLR and leave with ASE entry-level certifications.
4. What is one success story or proud moment you’ve had with a student who is now thriving in the industry?
- I had a student named Steven who fought with the counselors to stay in my program. They wanted to push him into 4-year university. He succeeded in staying in and graduated from the program. From there went to work at Ford for many years. Every year I have multiple students who enter into the Clover Park Technical College and Bates Technical College automotive programs. Then, become technicians from there.
5. What advice would you give to a shop owner who is considering hiring entry-level technicians or apprentices?
- Entry-level technicians are the best to employ. They can be trained to your standard, so they will do the job the way you want it done.

While fundraising was lighter than expected this year, we are continuing to share these efforts with the goal of building momentum and support for the 2026 season. Every contribution helps us strengthen these programs and continue making a meaningful impact for local children and families, and we’re grateful for everyone who helps keep this important work moving forward.

NWACA’s Pierce County members are dedicated to making sure no child goes without the magic of Christmas.
Thanks to our amazing community, gifts were successfully delivered to children at the Multi-Cultural Center in Tacoma. We are still accepting donations to help offset program costs and support Kids First as we continue planning for the 2026 season. Every contribution helps ensure we can keep this meaningful program going for years to come.
