What You Need to Know About "Stimming"

An easy way to understand stimming is as an action that people use in order to either make themselves have more energy or to calm down. The more accurate explanation is that the connections in our brain work best when we are able to organize the information sent from our environment in an efficient manner. We receive this information through our senses; vision, smell, taste, touch, proprioception (body awareness), and vestibular (head position and movement awareness).

In this month's featured blog post , occupational therapist Carolyn Miller explains what stimming is and what causes it, debunks myths about stimming, and discusses sensory strategies and techniques for kids who stim.

Get to Know You: Penny Navarro

In Get to Know You, we're asking our staff a few questions to give our families a peek into who they are as people, not simply providers. This month's Get to Know You features Front Desk/Scheduling Coordinator Penny Navarro:

Who is your hero?
My Bigma who passed away my freshman year in high school. She taught me everything I know along with my mom, from her wisdom to cooking skills to hoe remedies when sick. She always strived for the best, achieving all tasks and goals without any complaints, gave birth to 12 children and was a hardworking parent.

What is your favorite thing about your career?
I get to interact with families and help assist in any way possible.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
Being a parent to my 13 year old daughter and just showing her how to strive for excellence.

Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?
My nickname from my family is Boop not sure how they came up with it, but I fell in love with it, it was my favorite name from my dad who passed away in 2013.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?
My husband, daughter and mom, if people, but if just items I would say toothpaste, turmeric and garlic.

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?
Black panther
