The Importance of Celebrating Small Steps

All of us have OUR PLAN: big, small, vague, specific.
It doesn't matter what it is, everyone has a plan for themselves, their children, their family, their house, etc. You could have a 5-year plan, 10-year plan, a plan before or for a specific birthday, a day-to-day plan...or even all of the above!

In therapy, we set long- and short-term goals for each child.
These goals are all individualized according to each kiddo's current skill levels and their specific needs/desires. Some have one or two, others have six or seven. Some move through them quickly, and others take a longer time. We set the short-term goals with the aim of providing the tools needed for the kiddos (and families) to progress toward the long-term goals. All too often we are focused on OUR PLAN, the long-term goals, and the potential discharge from therapy, and we may overlook all of the steps it takes to get there. Your therapists are here to remind you of those little things that "snuck" past your radar - the ones on your "to-do list" and the ones not.

March is a Big Month for Our Kiddos!

World Down Syndrome Day

March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day and we're celebrating here at Kid's Creek with our SOCKS!  Show your support by wearing brightly colored socks, mismatched socks, or even extra socks to signify the extra chromosome that people with Down Syndrome carry. March 21 was chosen because people with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome (3/21 - get it?)

Share photos of your family in crazy socks (or any other way you celebrate World Down Syndrome Day!) on our Facebook page using the hashtag #KidsCreekWDSD or email them to

Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month

March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, and we want to celebrate our CP kids! Starting next week, we'll have a poster promoting awareness of CP - it will say "I Love Someone With CP" and we encourage parents of our CP Kids to sign their names on it all month long.

We also encourage you to share photos of your child with cerebral palsy on our Facebook page using the hashtag #KidsCreekCPKids or email them to

NEW: Cleft Palate Intensive Sessions

id's Creek Therapy is happy to offer our Cleft Palate Intensive Program, using evidence-based techniques to teach children with cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction the correct way to say speech sounds. This program benefits children with repaired and unrepaired clefts, submucous clefts, and palate weakness related to nerve damage. Within group settings, it will give children a chance to interact with peers with similar craniofacial anomalies. Goals of the program include:
  1. Familiarize children with the feeling of making pressure consonants
  2. Teach children to use nasal occlusion independently (if necessary)
  3. Set up individualized home program with families to continue use of therapy in home environments
Cleft Palate Intensive Programs are available in either individual or group format for children of a variety of ages and stages of cleft palate repair. Contact us at 770-888-5221 or speak with the front desk to learn more.
