Type 1 Diabetes Screening Study Seeking Participants

Help Identify Children at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve pediatric care, we are inviting you to help

identify children who may be at risk for type 1 diabetes through a screening study, led

by Krista Cossen, MD.

Early detection can significantly reduce the chances of serious complications like

diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and we need your support to reach more patients who

could benefit from this early intervention.

Who Can Participate?

If you have patients aged 2 to 45 years with a first-degree relative or 2 to 17 years with

a second-degree relative who has type 1 diabetes, they may qualify for free

autoantibody screening through this study.

Why Encourage Participation?

  • Early Detection: Identifying at-risk children before symptoms appear allows for

proactive management and can significantly reduce the risk of DKA at the time of

diagnosis.

  • No Cost to Patients: The screening is provided at no cost through the study,

making it accessible to all eligible families.

Next Steps

To learn more about the study view the comprehensive overview document, developed

by Lori Desoutter, MD.

Dr. Kristina Cossen, from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is available to discuss the

process with you or your patients. If a patient screens positive, they will receive ongoing

monitoring and, if necessary, early intervention to help manage their condition.

*Study participation is optional and not required.

Question of the Week from Mineral, Inc – Political Talk at Work*

Question:

We usually don’t mind employees chit-chatting while they work, but some recent

politics-related conversations have gotten rather loud and heated. Can we tell

employees not to discuss politics at work?

Answered by the HR Experts at Mineral

You can limit political speech and associated conduct that are not work-related—provided you don’t infringe on protected Section 7 rights or applicable state laws. Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act gives non-supervisory employees the right to talk about the terms and conditions of their employment and the right to unionize. While this law protects some political activities, it doesn’t give employees the right to discuss politics during work hours unless they have an impact on the terms and conditions of their employment.

That said, we recommend focusing on the effects these discussions might be having on

job performance rather than on the specific topic of conversation. If an employee

spends too much time engaged in chit-chat, regardless of the topic, they’re probably not

performing their best. If nothing else, they’re distracting others.

You’re also certainly welcome to tell employees that all conversations should be held

with indoor voices and that non-work-related topics should be reserved for break areas

where they won’t be distracting those who need to focus.
