Kids On Ice in the News!

In case you missed it this week, WTOP published an article regarding the efforts local youth ice sports programs, including Kids On Ice®, are making to secure ice time at the new Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FDIA). For those who get their news from social media, this WTOP Instagram post might be easier to access. You also might be interested in the many comments from District residents.

Like you, the Kids On Ice® staff and Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FFD) board of directors are extremely disappointed that access to the beautiful new facility in southeast DC is so restricted. Please know that we are making every effort to establish a relationship with the Department of Parks and Recreation so that we can continue and grow the many ice sports and off-ice enrichment programs that were a hallmark of our many decades operating the "old" FDIA. (Let us know if we can provide additional information on our seven days-a-week, often 18 hours-a-day, programming at the old Fort.)

In the meantime, we are delighted that so many kids still participate in our skating classes, camps, and educational activities at other area facilities, allowing us to fulfill our mission of ensuring that all DC kids, regardless of economic circumstances and location, have the opportunity to experience ice skating sports, with top-notch instruction and in a community-oriented environment. Keep reading below to see what's been happening this summer!

Staying Cool and Connected in Summer!

✨ Summer Fun Camp is more than skating—it’s where confidence grows, friendships are formed, and dreams take the ice. ✨

Kids On Ice campers have been busy this month! In addition to honing their ice skating skills, campers have been building teamwork skills through sports (flag football, basketball, kickball, roller ball, and hockey) and creative projects. They've met new friends from our partner programs, Winners Lacrosse and DC-ICE, and learned how to transfer ice skating skills to inline skating. There are on-ice games, races, and dance parties. There's off-ice stretching and conditioning, movie times, and special surprises (like ice cream and popsicles!). Most importantly, there are coaches who were once campers themselves—returning to give back, inspire, and pass on their love for skating to the next generation. Their journeys are living proof of what’s possible when passion is nurtured. 💕.

We’re deeply grateful to Capital ClubHouse in Waldorf, Maryland, our home for Summer Fun Camp for the past two years—and again this year. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, we’ve been able to provide transportation to and from camp, ensuring every child has access to the ice and the opportunity to thrive.

We’re ready for another unforgettable summer—5 weeks filled with joy, growth, and skill‑building both on and off the ice.

For nearly three decades, FFDIA has been committed to providing free and low-cost access to ice sports for all kids in DC. As we reflect on where we've been and where we're headed, we recognize that our strength has always come from a diverse community of friends and supporters. The continued support of so many of our dedicated friends, who stood by us through a global pandemic and continue to stand with us now, allows us to keep serving youth in DC on the ice and beyond -- and for that, we are sincerely grateful.
