Summer 2021 Internships

Have you started looking for a Summer 2021 internship? Virtual recruiting efforts are in full swing, as Kiewit and many other companies are working hard to attract and recruit talent like you. Internships are essential to your personal and professional development, providing a unique opportunity to apply your knowledge, gain skills, and figure out what you want to do for your career. Here are some tips from Kiewit Recruiters on how to land the perfect internship.

What to Look For
Seek out internships that will align with your career goals and priorities. What do you want to get out of your internship? What is most important to you when choosing a company? At Kiewit, our internships allow you to gain real-world experience and tackle some of the same responsibilities as our full-time employees. Here you’ll learn directly from experts in the field, expand your knowledge, and make major contributions to a variety of challenging, landmark projects.

"When looking for an internship, make sure to look for a company where you would like to start your career. Kiewit's ultimate goal is to hire interns for full time positions." - Brianna Hacker, Talent Acquisition Advisor

Networking in our Virtual World
During these unprecedented times, many aspects of our daily lives have gone virtual. Because of this, it is more important than ever that you keep up with virtual networking. This includes keeping your online profiles up-to-date such as LinkedIn and Handshake. Our Kiewit recruiters spend a great deal of time looking for the right candidates on social media and about 7% of our offers come from sourcing the person online. Both LinkedIn and Handshake offer great ways to keep up with what’s going on in the world and our industry, who’s hiring, and to make it easy for employers to find you as the right opportunities surface.

"Internships will help you figure out what you want to do in the real world, outside of school. Make sure to keep this in mind when looking for opportunities." - Ashley Wentzel, Talent Acquisition Advisor

Summer 2021 is right around the corner, so make sure you are beginning the process of looking for internships that will further your career!

Kiewit Markets and Subsidiaries
Kiewit’s operational structure has helped us become a leader within our industry. Kiewit
operates its business through many subsidiaries, or Kiewit-owned companies. Some subsidiaries have the Kiewit name (e.g. Kiewit Building Group Inc., Kiewit Engineering Group, Inc. etc.), and some don’t (e.g. Mass. Electric Construction Co., Ganotec Inc., etc.). Each subsidiary provides the company the ability to support a wide variety of project needs
and enhances the company’s breadth of services, along with its size and strength.

How to Crush a Virtual Interview

Interviews can be stressful so here are some tips to help set you up for success.

How to Prepare
Before your interview, research the company and review the job description, and be prepared to explain your interest in
the opportunity and why you’re the best person for the role. Have your resume ready to be prepared to provide examples of your relevant skills and experiences that demonstrate your qualifications for the position.

The Day of the Interview
Once you accept an invitation for a virtual interview, test your technology. Check your Internet connectivity, confirm your camera and microphone are working, and make sure you know how to join the virtual platform. This will go a long way in showing the employer you can manage technology. Also, make sure you are in a clean, quiet place with good lighting and eliminate all distractions. Silence your phone, close your email and set your instant messenger to ‘Do Not Disturb’ so you can give the interviewer your full attention. It is also a good idea to dress as though you were attending an in-person interview.

"It is really important to test the technology before your virtual interview. This will help you set yourself up for success!" - Ashley Wentzel, Talent Acquisition Advisor

During the Interview
You can’t firmly shake the interviewer’s hand or as easily exude enthusiasm via video, but you can monitor your body language. Communicate confidence by sitting up straight, smiling, and keeping the camera at eye level. Also, be prepared to ask questions that will help you determine if the company and position are a good match for you. At Kiewit, candidates often stand out when they ask what it’s like to work, grow, and advance within the organization. Virtual interviews can be tricky, so it is important to make yourself stand out as much as possible!

"Take the time to get to know your interviewer. It is more challenging to make connections in a virtual setting so becoming more engaged with the person you are interviewing with can help you make a lasting impression." - Brianna Hacker, Talent Acquisition Advisor
