Age Well Arrowhead Completes Service Enterprise Certification
|
After a comprehensive assessment, Age Well Arrowhead was one of 5 non-profit organizations in our region to be selected to work with HandsOn Twin Cities (HOTC) and the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) on completing the Points of Light Service Enterprise Initiative (SEI). A Service Enterprise Initiative is a national change management program, led by Points of Light, that helps organizations better meet their mission through the power of volunteers.
Three Age Well Staff met with other cohort participants and trainers over the course of a year to identify the characteristics of a Service Enterprise and learn how we can leverage volunteers and their skills within our organizations.
Service Enterprise Characteristics include:
• Planning & Development
• Leadership Support
• Resource Allocation
• Tracking and Evaluation
• Outreach
• Funding
• Effective Training
*A Service Enterprise is an organization that leverages volunteers and their skills to successfully deliver on its social mission.
These high-performing organizations have deeply integrated volunteers into their strategic plan and organizational infrastructure thereby allowing them to reduce cost and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
*Service Enterprise organizations report that they are better prepared to engage volunteers to meet their mission and experienced new, purposeful energy around volunteer engagement.
After a full year of strategic planning, training, and program development, Age Well Arrowhead presented and met all the necessary requirements within a complex rubric of outcomes and hope to have formal notification of our SEI certification in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned to celebrate with us!

Startling Statistics Regarding Elder Abuse in Minnesota
Taking Care of Your Health and Exercising Your Mind and Body Every Day Can Help Prevent Elder Abuse Situations
June 12, 2018
|
The month of June is officially known as Elder Abuse Awareness Month but talking about the ongoing issues can be difficult and especially hard to detect.
Statistics show that:
- One in ten Americans aged 60 or older have experienced some form of elder abuse.
- 400 cases of elder abuse are reported each week in Minnesota alone.
- Almost 60 percent of elder abuse is done by a family member.
- Elders who have been abused have a 300 percent higher risk of death.
- Financial abuse and fraud costs older American $36.5 billion per year.
Kim Hileman, Program Director at Age Well Arrowhead, of
fered some advice and tips on how to go about reporting elder abuse if you see it happening in your life.
- If the person is in immediate, life-threatening danger, call 911.
- MN Adult Abuse Reporting Center (844) 880-1574 (vulnerable adults)
- If the abuse is financial, fraud or scam related, call the Duluth Police Department Financial Crimes Unit at (218) 730-5160.
- If the abuse occurs in a long-term nursing facility, call your Long Term Care Ombudsman at (218) 999-5369.

Building a Strong Community with Dementia Education
|
By Peter Hafften, Training
Coordinator
Right: Staff of Republic Bank
|
Dementia impacts all of us. We are often affected on different levels, whether it be grandparent, spouse, or even a customer. Recently, I was honored to attend a presentation by Marty Schreiber. He is the former governor of Wisconsin but more importantly the husband and former caregiver to his wife, who is battling dementia. He shared a very moving and powerful story about their lives together and how dementia has changed all of that. His message was clear, “If Alzheimer’s is bad, ignorance of the disease is worse”.
He focused on the message many times throughout his presentation and used it to promote his newly released book
, My Two Elaines
. The book describes his own personal battles with understanding the disease, learning how to care for his wife, and eventually accepting things that he no longer had control over. More so, the book includes several diary entries from his wife Elaine as she faced the reality of living with Alzheimer’s Disease.
While listening to the former governor, it made me realize that it is essential for businesses to become trained to handle, recognize, and support people who are impacted by dementia.
I am proud to announce that Age Well Arrowhead has continued to provide customized dementia training to businesses and has helped grow awareness about the disease throughout the community. More and more businesses are welcoming the
Dementia Friendly at Work
training. Most recently, employees at Republic Bank completed the training. It is my hope that businesses continue to recognize the benefits of becoming dementia friendly and that Age Well Arrowhead can continue to support those battling the disease, as well as those caring for loved ones.
I agree with former Governor Schreiber that “If Alzheimer’s is bad, ignorance of the disease is worse”, but if we work together we can build a community that is knowledgeable about dementia, and welcoming to everyone.

Meet a Board Member
Joe Sandbulte,
Board Secretary
|
Joe Sandbulte is a Merchandise Planner at Maurices as well as Age Well Arrowhead's Board Secretary. Prior to returning to his native Duluth, he served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society in the Twin Cities.
On top of being on the board, Joe volunteers for grocery delivery and snow shoveling through Age Well, in addition to other opportunities provided by Maurices.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, hiking Duluth’s expansive trail networks, and working on home improvement projects.
Joe says, "
I have enjoyed my time on the board thus far. It has been a great opportunity to help to shape Age Well's future and learn from the other board members. As the organization continues to grow there will be new challenges for us to work through and I am excited to help do my part in ensuring we continue our positive momentum!"
Thank you Joe for being a part of Age Well Arrowhead!

Volunteers Make a Difference
|
|
It is easy to get lost in my own life. Problems, both global and personal, can feel unmanageable.
Once a week, I have the privilege of helping my fellow citizens. This humbling service allows me to be active in creating a kinder world - no matter how small the gesture, while forcing me to take note of my blessings. Age Well Arrowhead is good for the community and it good for my soul.
-Elizabeth N, Volunteer since 2016

Age Well Arrowhead connects older adults and caregivers to services that support healthy aging and independence.
We are passionate about serving the older adults and caregivers of our community. For this reason, Age Well Arrowhead was founded in 2014 as a local non-profit. We are funded by a Live Well at Home grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Title III funding administered by the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging, a grant from the Minnesota Board on Aging, contributions, and service fees. These grants allow us to provide services that are easily accessible and affordable.
