From the President
How about those Bengals? They must have taken a lesson from us; against all odds they just keep on going! Who-Dey! I recently explained to someone what Kindervelt is, and they were amazed at our story, especially how we have orchestrated ways to overcome the obstacles of fundraising during the pandemic. It’s an encouraging story to tell.

It’s never too cold to raise those hands and step up for some leadership roles both on the BOT and in your groups. I never imagined that I would ever be on the BOT, let alone fill the role of citywide President, but it certainly is a rewarding experience. Please consider reaching out to our Nominating Chair, Nancy Groves-Van Buskirk at nomchair@kindervelt.org to discuss becoming a part of the leadership team.
I was devastated receiving the news that one of our dear Kindervelt friends, Dr. Hector Wong passed away in January. He was passionate about his work and so wonderful to interact with as he truly believed in our mission. He is missed and my thoughts are with his family.
I hope February is finding you well and just so you know, friends can celebrate Valentine’s Day too, not just couples in love. It’s about showing affection to the VIPs in our lives. Kindervelt members are definitely VIP’s in my life considering all the wonderful things they do, so…. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

In Memoriam: Hector Wong, MD
|
It is with great sadness we share that Dr. Hector Wong who recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Dr. Wong was a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Champion and Kindervelt advocate. We worked closely with him in the 90’s and again currently as we support the Division of Critical Care. He spoke at our 50th Jubilee just this past November.

New Year New Opportunities!
|
|
The Nominating Committee will be working on filling the various Kindervelt Board of Trustee positions during the month of February. Being on the KV Board is a very rewarding experience that gives you the opportunity to enhance your natural skills and have fun doing it. The Board meets the last Monday of the month August thru May and with the group presidents on the first Monday of the month September thru May. So if you, or you know of someone who, enjoys doing any of the following - working with numbers, writing, organizing, planning, computers, social media, technology, meeting people, or just a creative person who wants to help Kindervelt make a difference in the lives of children, then seriously consider becoming a member or recommending someone to be a member of the Kindervelt Board of Trustees.

Kindness Genuinely Matters
By Regina Vogt, LISW-S
|
|
It’s no secret that we are in the middle of a high-stress time. The reality is that we haven’t had much control over our lives for the past two years. We’ve lost loved ones, feared for our own health, had our routines completely overhauled, experienced financial struggles, and so on. Despite the uncertainty that the pandemic has brought to our lives, there is something over which we do have control—kindness. Engaging in acts of kindness has a substantial impact on our mental health. Kindness has been shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood. It boosts serotonin and dopamine, which are chemicals in the brain that provide feelings of wellbeing and cause the pleasure/reward centers in our brain to turn on. Endorphins--our body’s natural pain killer—may also be released.
It’s so easy to go on autopilot and put little thought into our daily activities. For instance, many people describe the experience of driving to a familiar place and not remembering any details of the drive because of not being mentally present. I would like to challenge you, the reader, to start sprinkling random acts of kindness into your daily routine. When going through the drive-thru to get your usual coffee order, pay for the coffee of the person behind you. Leave notes of kindness on people’s cars. Cook and deliver a meal to someone. Tell a coworker what you love about working with them. Pay compliments to strangers. Shovel a neighbor’s snow. Acts of kindness bring joy both to the person giving and receiving the kindness. Seemingly small acts of kindness create a ripple effect that touches the lives of many. And if there were ever a time for waves of kindness to spread across this planet, the time is now.

Thank you to our many members who worked so hard to make our Christmas Cookie Sale a huge success. We baked over 1,300 cookies, packaged them in boxes and tied 3 boxes per order with pretty seasonal bows ready for a gift or to add to your holiday table. Pickup and delivers were done efficiently. We made approximately $900. It was fun and was a job well done!
