Welcome back everyone! I hope you all have enjoyed some fun this summer. Speaking of fun, the W&S Tennis Open Tournament served up some exciting matches this year. Tennis for Charity is supporting Kindervelt with a matching donation in appreciation for all that KV does for the city. I would say that’s a Grand Slam! Thank you, Debbie Clerc and your team of over 160 volunteers.
What a fun afternoon at Third Eye Brewing Company! Thank you, Kelly Anderson, for hosting a fun social to create awareness and bring in some new members.
With summer ending and school starting, the fall season becomes a busy time of year. The new Board of Trustees met August 29th and I look forward to meeting with all the group presidents at our first Leadership meeting on September 12th.
Caroline Cox, our Projects Chair, has numerous project requests coming in. One of our anticipated events is our Citywide Bowling Event. Yes, Bowling is back! Event chairs, Suzanne Nemeth, Andi Mapes and their committee are enthusiastically planning and preparing. Save the date, March 4th at Stone Lanes.
Have you caught the Pickleball fever yet? KV #8 will be hosting the first annual Pickleball Tournament under the leadership of Ginny Myer and Sherry Weckenbrock on February 25th at Five Seasons Family Sports Club. Save the date for this exciting new event.

Member Highlight - Kim Lucken
|
|
We have some very interesting facts about long time member, Kim Lucken. Kim was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan (our motor and Motown city). After college she went on to earn her MBA in Business. Kim worked in Healthcare Administration while living in Grand Rapids. While working at the local hospital she joined the Jr. Guild volunteering as a dinner and activities coordinator. Being a volunteer has always been part of Kim's life. As a young student, she helped with reading. As a young mother, she was involved with JDRF, (Raffles and Walks), Lindbergh Center for Hope and continued her volunteering through her church and Interfaith Hospitality Network (Homeless), VBS volunteer, room mother and PTO President.
She and her husband, Bill, raised three children and when a new job opportunity came along, they found themselves in Montgomery in 1999. Kim was anxious to get out and meet people and find a new purpose. As luck would have it, she saw an ad in the newspaper promoting Kindervelt. She contacted membership, became a guest at a local meeting and as the quote goes, "the rest is history." Kim loved the ladies and more importantly Kindervelt's mission statement. Two of their children received health services at CCHMC and that solidified her commitment to KV.
She has belonged to three groups through disbandment and mergers and is currently involved with KV #22 in Montgomery. Kim has used her business skills as President, group Krafts Chair, Secretary, sub committees and is currently Kindervelt's Fall Event Chair and working with the North Region presenting, LAUGHTER, the BEST MEDICINE.
Kim is a big proponent of attending other groups' events and fundraisers."Not only is it fun, but you get to meet and be with other members who all have the same commitment to Kindervelt. As it gets harder to find volunteers, it is crucial that we all work together on our fundraisers. That is the thinking behind The North Region taking on the Fall Event. Certainly, many hands make light work. And, it also keeps the FUN in Kindervelt Fundraising."
A friend gave Kim a pouch with the following message- "Please stop me before I volunteer again." Kindervelt is grateful Kim didn’t follow that message. Thank you, Kim for all you do in our community and especially Kindervelt. See you and your committee members at Fall Event! -Sheila Horan

KV #3 is gearing up for another season of fundraising fun this month! Our September kickoff meeting will be in the evening, held at the home of our incoming president, Jean Kachikis. After fifty years of morning meetings, KV 3 is experimenting with the later time in order to boost attendance. Members are enthusiastically looking forward to sharing the bounty of their gardens and kitchens with each other through our First Friday sales. Make It, Bake It, Fake It will be held in November, and we will be involved with Let The Good Times Bowl, scheduled for early 2023. It's shaping up to be another fantastic year!
KV #8 Welcome back and thank you to the new (and continuing) officers for 2022-23: Ginny Myer, Sherry Weckenbrock, Shelly O’Neill, Susan Dixon, Kathy Sanborn, Char McBrayer, Maggie Schweitzer, Abby Ridenauer, and Carla Roller. Also thanks to those members stepping up to lead our projects. Here’s to a successful year!
KV #16 has already had 2 kraft sessions and lots more great ideas under our new Kraft Chairperson, Mitze James. We’re getting ready for all the kraft shows and having fun too!

KV #16 Bernecker Family Reunion was held at Miami Whitewater Park this summer and at the reunion we had 6 members who belong to KV #16 and we’re always recruiting additional family members. Plus we had 3 family members who were former KV members. It’s kind of a joke that some family members say ‘they’re afraid to retire’ because then they know they’ll have to join KV!

KV #19 The ladies of Kindervelt #19 are energized and ready to start their 2022-2023 fundraising season after hosting an open house for new members this month! Outside of planning for our big spring Lunch at the Links event, this year, the KV#19 ladies will help lead the silent auction for the Kindervelt citywide fall event as well! Two other ways the women will do some passive fundraising for Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is through Kroger Rewards and Amazon Smiles.
KV #30 has been meeting over the summer to make our crafts for the fall craft shows and we will begin to meet again in September.
KV #68 would like to thank Sheryl Meister for hosting our summer get together at her home. It was enjoyed by all! Looking forward to our September meeting to start out the new year for Kindervelt and all that is happening in the fall.
KV #78 is gearing up for a fall garage sale with fall, Christmas and other holiday decorations September 30 and October 1st! Many new items for year round holiday decorating. We are taking donations of fall & Christmas items also. Contact Mary Beth at marybeth.young75@gmail.com

Western & Southern Open Tennis Tournament
The Western & Southern (W&S) Tennis Tournament was another success for Citywide Kindervelt. Volunteers again sold souvenirs and ice to the guests while being ambassadors for the event each day.
There was a total of 225 shifts to be filled from August 13th to August 21st. Prior to the start of the tournament shifts were 100% full of more than 160 individuals! A special thanks to those who worked, especially 2, 3 and even 4 shifts. So many of these individuals return year after year in support of Kindervelt and great tennis.
Covid affected our workers and scheduling but those who were healthy, stepped up and filled those last-minute vacancies. We are grateful for your time and enthusiasm.
Special thanks go to KV Groups 12, 16, 22, 29, 49, 57, and 78 along with members from Citywide for your volunteer hours. Your time spent is fully appreciated at the tournament.
Katie Haas, Western & Southern Open CEO, expressed her appreciation for the strong partnership that Kindervelt has developed over the years with the tournament and the community. Ms. Haas’ appreciation secured additional funds for Kindervelt from 'Tennis for Charity' (tennis4charity.org), whose chairman Ken Berry kindly agreed to match Kindervelt’s commission for the W&S up to $10,000! We await the final numbers.
Forever grateful,
Debbie Clerc
W&S Volunteer Chairman ‘22

Jeff Robbins, Ph.D - CCHMC Heart Institute
Dr. Jeffery Robbins passed away unexpectedly August 20th. He was executive co-director of the Heart Institute while we supported the Heart Institute - Neurodevelopmental, Educational & Learning Center from 2013-2016. He spoke to us many times. More information HERE.
