Bicycle for a Friend

When visiting rural schools in Cambodia it is always heartwarming to notice the spirit of friendship and cooperation. So, the following story doesn’t come as a surprise, but a testament to the kindness of children.

During the recent big yearly Rotary bicycle distribution, a young girl noticed that her best friend didn’t receive a bicycle. Yet she had further to walk from her home to get to their school. She immediately decided to give her bike to her friend and was sad when her mother wouldn’t allow it. Our staff heard about the situation and offered to purchase an additional bike for her friend. It was a small gesture that celebrates kindness and empathy making a big difference in young friends’ lives.

Many children travel long distances on foot to get to school in scorching sun. We purchase used refurbished bicycles to help shorten the path to education.

Each bike costs $80.

Preschool Supplies Distributed

Suitcases full of used toys collected by families in Singapore travelled to Cambodia with the large group of Rotarians coming for their annual visit. Toys found a second life in the arms of the happy little preschoolers in 5 community preschools in Angkor Thom District.

Additionally, a total of 28 preschools received a much needed replenishment of teaching and learning supplies like crayons, paper, glue, staplers etc. These were donated by WorldinPeace Org in Japan.

Family In Need

CCDO staff’s presence is constant in the local communities, and we often hear heartbreaking stories.

Ms. Thy Sarai who is now 21 years old and an abandoned mother caring for her three young children—two daughters aged 4 and 5, and a son who is 2 years old. Her husband left the family and disappeared without a trace while she was pregnant with her youngest child, leaving her dependent on her elderly mother for help and daily support. Sadly, her mother recently passed away due to illness and malnutrition, leaving Ms. Sarai without family support and in a very vulnerable situation.

At present, she relies on the kindness of neighbors to help meet basic needs. Although the commune has issued her an ID Poor card, which entitles her to a monthly allowance of $8.50 this is far from sufficient to cover food, and education-related expenses.

A mere $50 a month for nutritional food supplies will help this young mother and pay for, six months training with a local tailor arranged and supervised by CCDO which will allow her to start a small business to get her to be self-sufficient. We strongly believe in a “hand up and not a hand out”.

Health & Safety in School Program Continues

We are grateful to Texel Foundation for continuing to fund this important program for another year with a grant of £10,000 ($13,700) so we can positively impact additional rural communities. The program trains teachers and community leaders on the importance of many different topics such as health issues, puberty, anti-drugs, road safety and general nutrition and hygiene. They pass on this information to countless students. All of this adds an additional layer of awareness that goes beyond basic education and ensures a healthy and safe development and future.

Donors

The call to our founder and president Jenni came in the middle of the night. “Is this CCDO?” A California couple Burton & Carol Goldfield recently travelled with a travel agency to Cambodia. As part of their trip they donated and visited a water well in rural Cambodia. They were so touched by the impact of having fresh clean water at your doorstep, that they looked up NGOs that built wells. They found our CCDO and have now committed $25,000 through their foundation to build wells and latrines in the area.

Goldfield grant

We are working with their guide Mr. Rum who is helping with the needs assessment to find worthy recipients in the areas visited by his foreign guests. Thank you Jenni for always picking up the phone and thank you Burton & Carol for reaching out and offering your incredibly generous support.
