Letter from the Editor

Dear Kindred,

What to do during the holiday break, and as our world braces for possibly the most pivotal year in human history? Let’s reimagine our world in less than 30 minutes with the Evolved Nest’s short film collection. See the film descriptions below and follow the links to watch them. Then register to join our live discussion with Darcia Narvaez on January 8 at 12 p.m. ET.

Below you will find highlights from 2023, dates for live discussions, and new resources introduced this year. Don't forget to join us on our dedicated platform at www.KindredCommunity.org.

We've created and shared many resources with you this year, and connected you with worldview-shifting, consciousness-raising Wayfinders, New Cycle Makers, and Trancebreakers. You've told us in our Great Nonprofit Reviews how much you rely on and appreciate our work, and that they are free of charge.

Please help us keep our materials coming in another banner year. With our upstream vision of a Wisdom-based, Wellness-informed Society in mind, please consider supporting our work with your year-end annual or monthly donation. If you do, we will send you a beautifully created collection of Darcia's essays, Moving Towards Kinship Worldview and Wisdom in PDF form (see more below).

Thank you for your companionship on our journey together. We look forward to seeing you in the coming year in our live gatherings and forthcoming virtual classroom programs. In the meantime, enjoy this year's highlights below, carefully curated to support our Interbeing and Interconnection as we plan another year of reimagining humanity.

Warmly,

Lisa Reagan

Breaking the Cycle illustrates our capacity for breaking our current Cycle of Competitive Detachment and returning to the pattern of 95% of our human history: a healthy, peaceful Cycle of Cooperative Companionship. Breaking the Cycle is based on the multi-award-winning book, Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture, Wisdom.

The Evolved Nest: Nature's Way of Raising Children is the second short film in a series that includes Reimagining Humanity and Breaking the Cycle. This short film in an accompaniment to the acclaimed book, The Evolved Nest, by Darcia Narvaez and G.A. Bradshaw.

The goal of Reimagining Humanity is to expand human imagination, based in deep history and transdisciplinary science, about human potential. We have not always been so stressed, disconnected and mindlessly destructive. For most of our species existence we have lived in cooperative companionship. The film illustrates what this looks like.

How A Wellness-Informed Worldview Supports Trauma-Informed Insights: An Update On ACES And Attachment In Scotland

By Lisa Reagan

Why are Suzanne Zeedyk's insights important to the emerging global wellness and trauma-informed movements? Because her work shows that when a relational approach (based in attachment science) exists as a frame for trauma-informed insights (ACES), cultural transformation possibilities are very real. In contrast, in cultures that are not relationally–informed, such as the United States, reactions to ACES’ trauma-informed science operate without the context/worldview needed to lead us toward wellbeing and wholeness.

Facing Our Climate Change Fear With Our Original Brilliance: Stephanie Mines On The Maui Wildfires

By Stephanie Mines, PhD

In this interview you will travel an arc from acknowledgement of grief, despair, and paralysis so many of us feel in the face of climate change to a practical, assessable plan of action ground in regenerative healthcare practices that can activate your own Original Brilliance. As Stephanie shares, “As our inner climate becomes congruent with Original Brilliance then our activism at this juncture, when all of us are needed, is in integrity to our Original Brilliance.”

How Many Genders Are There?

You Will Be Surprised.

By Darcia Narvaez, PhD

Human sexuality is a complicated biological affair. There are both organizational and activational aspects that occur in utero and at puberty that affect post-puberty sexuality. Brain circuits and body appearance are influenced separately. As a result, the brain may be oriented one way but the body appear as the other gender. Brain circuits and body appearance are actual separable effects.

How Universities Can Use The Palestine-Israeli Tragedies To Decolonize Themselves And Create Life Worlds Instead Of Death Worlds

By Four Arrows

This comparison of the Palestinian struggle to that of the Indigenous peoples on the North American continent allows an understanding of the structures of power and domination that settler states share. Until we can realize that settler colonialism “destroys to replace” and that such destruction of cultures and the ecological systems the original inhabitants preserved, all of life on earth is doomed. If higher education fails the decolonial/Indigenizing movement that seek a healthy balance between the worldview precepts behind colonialism and those that guided us for 99% of human history, perhaps leaders will emerge to rebuild in ways that do not look like most of the post-apocalyptic movies I’ve watched that tend to start where we left off.

Becoming Our Inner Sage: We Are Our Own Master

By Spring Cheng, PhD

As we more and more awaken the Healer within and enliven it with devotion, there is less and less victimhood. Instead, agency, power and sense of choice and responsibility arise. We may grow appreciative or even honored for these imprints that used to be called wounds. When that happens naturally (without forcing it to happen), the imprints, or the wounds are transformed into a personalized source of medicine available for the healer to perform healing in the world.

Why Kids Should Learn The Original STEM: Ancient Survival Skills

By Jessica Carew Kraft

In a world filled with advanced technologies and conveniences, why would anyone want to learn the ancient skills of our ancestors, especially when a digital utopia seems imminent? Yet our bodies and brains are still fundamentally the same as those of early humans who lived as hunter-gatherers for hundreds of thousands of years.

To End Domestic Violence, Heal The Abusers… Say Those Who Do

By Jane Stevens

Understanding the science of childhood adversity opens the door to the change in mindset that occurs in healing, says Dave Lockridge, CEO of ACE Overcomers and a former pastor. People learn that:

  • They weren’t born bad.
  • They had no control over their childhoods.
  • They coped with the stress of their ACEs understandably, given that they were not provided healthy alternatives. That coping includes drinking, violence, rage, over-eating, engaging in thrill sports, and addiction to sex, gambling, and shopping, among other coping mechanisms.
  • They can change.

“Learning about the ACE Study showed them that they’re not crazy, that they’re not weak, that they were primed for choices and behaviors,” she says, “And now this knowledge gave them an opportunity to boost their esteem in a healthy way and to build in resilience.”

28 Days Of Solo Play: Learning To Play As An Adult

Adults often have a hard time being spontaneously playful. For many of us, physical, bouncy play was discouraged even in childhood. The older you get, the more it is perceived to be undignified, unless you are an athlete of some sort and are involved in sports (organized play). Organized play is great for exercise and team spirit, but it’s not the same as spontaneous play.

The 28 days of solo play are intended to help break the ice about playing as an adult. Each day you can take little actions that loosen you up. There is no right or wrong way to move. Just enjoy your body moving through space!
