The Mother of Medicine: A Kindred Special Issue

Dear Kindred,

My deepest gratitude to everyone who sent prayers and well wishes during my recovery from multiple eye surgeries these past nine months. My Kindred family surrounded me with support that extended to healing sessions, prayer circles, and offers to be guest editors while my eyesight was limited. In addition to a recalibration of my own energies, I received healing gifts only possible through community, and divinely directed rest and dreamtime. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

In this special issue, you and I are unwrapping one of the many generous gifts offered during my recovery. This spring, Stephanie Mines graciously envisioned a special issue of Kindred for us. Stephanie is the author of multiple books on trauma recovery, regenerative health, prenatal life, and Indigenous worldview. We celebrated her collection of poetry, The Great Physician, during National Poetry Month in April. She is a contributing editor for Kindred and Kindred World's vice president. The Mother of Medicine events in May and November this year are co-sponsored by Kindred.

While Stephanie midwifed The Mother of Medicine Issue, she simultaneously welcomed Willow Rose, her granddaughter. The Mother of Medicine issue is dedicated to Willow and all children bringing their light and love into our world during our human family's birth and transition.

In our forthcoming issue, I will share Kindred World's updates, including the launch of the beta-testing cohort for the Nesting Ambassador program in June. Darcia Narvaez and I have worked diligently with Kindred staff to build the Nested World's classroom, website, and ambassador program materials. Our book, Bringing to Life the Evolved Nest, is writing itself during this process, as we take careful notes during the initiative's development and collect your stories from the field.

Finally, please support our nonprofit work with your generous donations (check out our 126 five-star reviews here). We continue to be lifted on the wings of our community's healing vision for our world. Together, we are the re-generation!

With gratitude,

Lisa Reagan

What Is The Mother of Medicine?

By Stephanie Mines, PhD

The real and central question is, how do we clear the space, how do we convince enough women to own their own healing gifts, their voices of truth, their capacity to lead from their lineage of the love of the Mother for Her Creation? That arousal, through the retelling, the modeling, the reminders of indigenous wisdom and science, which are one and the same, is what we are doing in the Mother of Medicine events that I have been inspired to develop.

Re-Mothering Mythology: Healing the Lineage of Medicine

By Jessica Spring Weappa, PhD

Rooted in mythopoeia (the creation of myth) and gnosis (direct spiritual insight), mythopoeic matrignosis invites mother-centered ways of knowing and remembering. It invites us to immerse into the symbolic, the ancient, the embodied—not to anatomize, but to sense. It asks us to re-enter the stories we inherited and locate the missing mother, to feel her heartbeat beneath the narrative, to recover meaning that was once hidden.

The Embodied Relationship:

The Protective Function of Nurturing Communication, Music, and Emotions During Prenatal Life

By Antonella Sansone, PhD

These practices, which have been cultivated by our indigenous ancestors for millennia, release tensions and regulate emotions, and a range of psychophysiological benefits are transmitted to the unborn baby. These are not just activities; they are gateways of perception and tools for expressing the full potential of being.

The Prenatal Shadow: Healing the Traumas Before and at Birth

By Cherionna Menzam-Sills, PhD

“Shadow material longs for the light. It yearns to be seen. The hidden parts of us are like long-lost children, terrified of being discovered, but still craving the love they haven’t received. If we were to open a door and discover one of these children, they might kick and scream if we held them close. After some time, they would settle and begin to cuddle into us. This is what they have been waiting for. What is waiting in your shadow?”

Rooted in Care: Reimagining Motherhood Through the Wisdom of the Earth

By Allie Davis, PhD

Motherhood awakens us to the complex growth that defines our humanity—the same spark of life that animates the natural world and sustains ecosystems through daily acts of care. While awareness of ecological crisis can feel overwhelming, it is not merely a burden. It is also a call to action.

The Origins Of The Mother Of Medicine Movement

An Interview with Julie Gerland

and Stephanie Mines, PhD

The way that we change the world is through identifying how our own personal stories, including our birth stories, are self-guided instructions for alchemy. Wounded healers are the leaders of true civilization which must be fundamentally compassionate. Mothers and parents are the foremost amongst these wounded healer leaders. In order to truly parent, we must trace our own origins. This is how we steward the future.

Saving Our DEMOCRACY

Standing Up When Democracy Falls

By Kelly Wendorf

The most chilling part of this video of Dr. Teresa Borrenpohl being violently dragged out of her local town hall meeting by plainclothes private security (for doing nothing illegal) all while being wildly taunted by her Congressman is that not a single person moved to protect her. A human wall could have blocked the aisle. We must have each other’s backs.

Rigid Adults Take Control: What Happened?

Baby rage in adult clothing

By Darcia Narvaez, PhD

The USA is being turned upside by ideologues who are not interested in negotiation or compromise but only obedience to their mental models. The nested pathway does not produce such outcomes. So, how did this come about? Why are there so many of us adults who are rigid and motivated to impose our beliefs and practices on others? Why do so many express derision and contempt (fear and rage) for diverse ways of being, whether in biology, color, ethnicity, origin or religion?

The New Bills Of Rights To Work For

Economic, Child, Baby, Women, Gender, Nature

By Darcia Narvaez, PhD

I have visions for a full democracy, where every person on Earth, only some of which are human, are treated as sovereign beings, with dignity and respect. To get to that place, we may need to awaken our imaginations by understanding the rights of various groups whose various needs have been overlooked. Here is a short list of bills of rights that we can all aim for. (They only leave out wealthy adult males, which the dominant culture revolves around.)

How Deep Nested Communities Foster Cooperative Companionship Instead Of Competitive Detachment

What can we learn from deep nestedness?

Our species-typical existence was one of deep nestedness. Deep nestedness has three elements:

(1) ongoing communal nestedness which includes providing evolved nest nurturing to young children to optimize normal development;

(2) intergenerational nestedness that honors ancestral wisdom and the wellbeing of future generations; and

(3) cosmic nestedness that involves practices that maintain a sense of rootedness in Earth’s cycles and systems as well as a sense of connectedness to the cosmos.

Kindred World Posts & Films Featured In 1st Impressions Exhibit At Sofia University Conference

“Including the inspired content of Evolved Nest and Kindred Media in the 1st Impression Exhibit felt as natural as it was compelling. The synchronicities between the two initiatives felt like connecting stars in a luminous constellation – each of Kindred’s endeavors seem to underscore the fundamental need for our global society to look critically and compassionately at “re-nesting” our human family towards a rebirth of human consciousness,” P. Jaspr Chang, LMFT, founder of Kaiyros.
