Happy Landings Luna 6!
It all began with Dr. Robert Goddard. In 1926, Dr. Goddard successfully launched the first liquid-fueled rocket. During WWII two men, Dr. Wernher von Braun and Helmut Grottrup, took Dr. Goddard’s research and built a scalable, functioning liquid-fueled rocket, the V-2. Nazi Germany considered this a weapon, but the two Germans knew this was how we were to conquer space. After WWII, von Braun came to NASA and made Apollo a reality. Grottrup went to the Soviet Union and helped launch Sputnik. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued a challenge and a mandate for the United States to reach the moon. But in 1959, the Soviet Union started the Luna Programme with exactly the same goal in mind. Of course, this was no easy task, and the Luna program worked until May 12, 1965, with the Luna 6, to successfully get an unmanned probe to the Moon. Unfortunately, it crashed upon landing, but the lessons learned were to allow the Luna 9 to successfully land on the Moon nine months later. So this week at King’s Hobby, 7801 N Lamar Blvd, Suite E-188 we reflect on mankind’s quest for space, both US and Soviet, both fact and fiction, with a stunning display of kits, rockets, and collectibles. Or you can log in to kingshobby.com to see all the items from the final frontier in our virtual warehouse.
