The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread!
On July 7, 1928, in Chillicothe, MO, the Chillicothe Baking Company sold the first commercially sliced loaf of bread. At that point, the best thing since sliced bread was actually sliced bread. After a 16 year development process, inventor Otto Frederick Rohwedder sold the first single loaf bread-slicing machine to Chillicothe and on this fateful day ninety-five years ago, sliced bread was ready for market. The slogan at the time was, “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped”! Then in 1933 an uncredited advertisement for a single loaf cut into both thick and thin slices claimed, “this is the greatest improvement since sliced bread”. A phrase was coined and an idiom created! Today the phrase is applied to any great innovation and is the ultimate compliment to an inventor. But sliced bread has had its controversies; during WWII, there was actually a ban on sliced bread! Yes, in 1943 the war effort was in full swing in the United States, and it was feared the hardened steel used for the blade of the slicing machine could affect war production. However, the ban was rescinded after two months due to the devastating effect on morale at home; sliced bread was back to stay. Today, 80% of all bread sold is sliced. At King’s Hobby, the greatest thing since sliced bread could have been the first Airfix Spitfire in styrene plastic, or the original Tamiya Panther in 1/35 scale, or the Monogram Midget Racer, or the first slide-molded Tamiya jeep, or the first resin Plymouth Fury drag racer body, or the Monogram B-36 in 1/72 scale. The "Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread" (GTSSB) can be a lot of things to a lot of people. So whatever your GTSSB might be, we just might have it at King’s Hobby Shop, 7801 N Lamar Blvd, Suite E-188.
