The Virtue of Moderation
Also known as: Restraint

DEFINITION OF MODERATION:
Attention to balance in one’s life

MODERATION LOOKS LIKE:
  • Taking the time each day to pray
  • Taking the time each day to rest
  • Taking the time each day to eat
  • Taking time to do your homework
  • Not spending too much time on the computer or watching TV

MODERATION SOUNDS LIKE:
  • I spent time praying today.
  • I have to go to bed on time.
  • It’s time to eat.
  • I spent some time doing my homework today
  • I did not spend too much time on the computer or watching TV

FEATURED SCRIPTURE:

“In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.”
~Luke 6:12
St. Francis of Assisi

The Catechism of the Catholic, in no. 2725, states that “The spiritual battle of the Christian’s new life is inseparable from the battle of prayer.” Francis had discovered a God who loved him, despite his former way of life. Now, Francis wanted to respond to that love and be close to God. The only way this could happen, Francis knew, was through prayer. Francis learned to pray through praying. As a young man very active in his social circle and learning the family trade as an aspiring cloth merchant, Francis had little time or inclination to silence and interior recollection. These were skills that Francis had to learn through dogged perseverance.
DIED: 1226
FEAST: Oct 4
VIRTUES: Patron Saint of Moderation

Upon his conversion from his former way of life, Francis began to spend long periods in solitude in the fields of Assisi. He would withdraw into isolated caves to be alone with God. Francis was so faithful to prayer that one biographer would write of him at the end of his life: “Francis did not so much pray as he became a prayer.” Like St. Francis, God is calling each one of us to a deep and personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. This relationship is realized, grows and finds its nourishment in prayer. At the beginning prayer is a struggle. In our world of instant downloads and ever-present technology, silence can seem scary. Yet, it is through persevering in silence that we will discover the God of love.
A Exciting Announcement from your Leadership Team!
Dear Royal Palm Academy Family,

Refining our educational model has, and continues to be, a top priority for Royal Palm Academy. Using feedback from our RPA community, we have noticed a need to adjust our approach to supporting our students and faculty in various areas including discipline, professional development, coaching, and hiring. In an effort to more effectively support our students and faculty, we have decided to adjust our administrative structure that is currently in place.

We are excited to announce a change to our Leadership Team that will take effect immediately! The Royal Palm Academy Leadership Team along with our Board of Directors has decided that the current “Dean of Faculty” role will be replaced with a “Dean of Upper School” and a “Dean of Lower School”.

Our Dean of Upper School role will be filled by Ms. Jenn Wojcik and will fully support both our students and teachers in grades 4 through 8. Mrs. Julie Mulligan will be our Dean of Lower School and be able to fully support our students and faculty in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade. We are confident that both Ms. Wojcik’s and Mrs. Mulligan’s expertise in these specific grade levels will allow them to concentrate their strengths and efforts in a very effective manner.

Ms. Wojcik and Mrs. Mulligan will now be responsible for all academic and disciplinary matters and faculty support at their respective grade levels. Faculty in the Upper School will directly report to Ms. Wojcik, and faculty in the Lower School will directly report to Mrs. Mulligan starting April 12th. Ms. Wojcik and Mrs. Mulligan will also work together with teachers and families in their respective levels, and parents should reach out to each directly, depending on their child[ren]’s grade level.

During our transition with a new Head of School, our entire Leadership Team including Mr. Dennis Frodsham, Business Manager/CFO; Mrs. Jennifer Scarafile, Director of Admissions/Marketing; Ms. Jenn Wojcik, Dean of Upper School; and Mrs. Julie Mulligan, Dean of Lower School; will now be using a team approach to recruiting and hiring effective and successful faculty and staff. Our Board of Directors has graciously offered their support and expertise to assist our Leadership Team where needed. Mr. Scott Baier will continue to be actively involved in the critical decisions that impact the current 2020-21 school year.

It is our goal and commitment to our families to bring vital new skills and experience to our school that will enhance our excellence in education. We will also be seeking candidates that complement our Catholic identity and bring warmth, inspiration and camaraderie to our unique culture.

We are confident that our conscientious approach to collaboratively use our talents will create only positive outcomes for both our students and faculty. We ask for your prayers as we implement these new roles and make the necessary adjustments for a superior educational experience for every child at Royal Palm Academy. As always, we invite you to call upon any one of us with questions or concerns that you may have at any time.

Peace and Blessings,

Your Leadership Team-
Mr. Frodsham, Ms. Wojcik, Mrs. Scarafile, Mrs. Mulligan

OUR LADY OF GOOD HEALTH
“O Lady of Good Health,

our Merciful Father chose you to be a powerful intercessor in times of trouble and woe.
As in past centuries when you have ended contagious diseases, we implore you now to end the Coronavirus which is damaging the health of many and spreading fear in our communities.
Teach us not to be afraid, to be courageous and generous in offering assistance to others, and to live joyfully in the state of grace.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
