The Kings Board of Education held a Work Session on
November 13, 2018 and a Regular monthly meeting on
November 20, 2018 in the Kings Education Center.

The Kings Board of Education holds two meetings each month. The second Tuesday of the month, they hold a Work Session and the third Tuesday of the month is their Regular Meeting.

The Board holds the Work Sessions to engage in dialogue and discuss specific topics in greater depth. Work Sessions are open to the public but no public comments are accepted. This newsletter is a compilation of both meetings . All meetings are recorded and available on our website .
Reports/Presentations Regular Meeting
  • Five Kings Junior High School staff members were presented to the Board by Mr. Spinner for their recent awards from the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA). Brooke Warner, Jamie Dean, Jen Bicknell, John Karabinus, and Vonda Fruhwirth were recognized as OMLA Team of the Year. Additionally, John Karabinus was received the 2018 Southwest Ohio Regional Award for Best Middle Level Practice in Student Advisory and PBIS. Not pictured: John Karabinus.

  • Kings Marching Band was recognized for their Superior Rating at the Ohio Music Education Association State Finals. Mr. Ackermann commended Band Directors, Brian McDonough and Mike Maegly and Color Guard Director, Jen Maegly on their commitment to the music students. Kings Marching Band Drum Major, Rowan Hayden was present along with senior section leaders Woodwinds- Sarah Flecker, Brass- Adam Ashour, Percussion- Kyle Bender, and Colorguard- Erica Smallenbarger.
Legislative Update
No Legislative update this month.
Public Participation
The following community members participated in the public participation portion of the meeting: Kim Grant (Board meeting times, enrollment, facilities, District culture).
Treasurer's Report - Cary Furniss
Mr. Furniss reviewed the revised tax rates for Fiscal Year 2019. He noted that the Warren County Auditor just completed home re-appraisals. The average growth in property values for homes in the Kings District increased by an average of 14%. He asked the Board to approve a resolution to accept the new tax rates including a reduction in bond millage. He also noted that the District is performing financially as we would expect and even with some improvement.

Lastly, the Board set the date for the 2019 Organizational Meeting for Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. Stacie Belfrom will serve as President Pro-Tem until a President is elected at the meeting.

The Board approved the following:

  • Minutes from the October 16 Regular Meeting and November 11 Work Session
  • Donations and Financial reports for the month of October
  • New Fee Structure for King Preschool and Childcare
  • Revised Tax Rates for Fiscal Year 2019
Superintendent's Report -
Tim Ackermann
Mr. Ackermann presented the draft of the District's #KingsStrong Strategic Plan. The #KingsStrong Committee put together action plans for each section of the plan. He said everything we do in the District will align to this plan for direction which will help our students academically and with their social-emotional needs. The Board approved the plan.

He also informed the Board that he will not be recommending a facilities bond campaign for May 2019. He noted that the Long Range Facilities Team wants to make sure they do their due diligence and take the time needed to address the concerns of the community from the Thoughtexchange. The committee will also be looking at permitting, road improvements, soil samples, pedestrian traffic, and making sure we are building for the future. Mr. Ackermann is planning on asking the Board to place a bond issue on the ballot in either August or November of 2019.

Lastly, Mr. Ackermann brought up a discussion item regarding changing the regular Board meeting times from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Board will discuss it and will need to make a decision at the Organizational Meeting in January 2019.

  • #KingsStrong Strategic Plan

Assistant Superintendent's Report - Timothy J. Spinner

The Board approved the following:

  • Certified and Classified employees
  • Certified and Classified substitutes
  • Staff resignations and retirements
  • Staff & coach supplementals and stipends
Business Manager's Report - Matt Luecke


Mr. Luecke presented the Board with new enrollment figures from Decision Insite. He also told the Board that the District will be using money from a Safety Grant to offer "Stop the Bleed" training for Kings Staff and Community.
Items Presented by the Board
Mrs. Phillips and the Board decided that they will conduct mid year evaluations for the superintendent and treasurer in Executive Session in January and February.

There was no executive session at the Regular Meeting.
