October Sermon Series: Creation: Our First Sanctuary

A Letter From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

Not only do I believe that young people matter to God--- I think that they show us God. Jesus told his followers to have faith like little children, and I take that seriously. Children and youth ask the deepest and most honest questions. They express their feelings with open hearts. They bring energy, passion, joy and so much life to the spaces they occupy. They reveal the Kingdom of God. For all these reasons, and more, I am committed to making sure that KUMC is a place where kids and teens are welcomed, loved, and celebrated. This month there are several EASY ways to support our kids and youth

Write a Bible Blessing

The last Sunday of the month we are presenting Bibles to 3rd graders and others who need a Bible. Will you write a note of blessing to be placed in a Bible with a few sentences about what the Bible means to you and what your hopes and prayers are for them as they read scripture? E-mail your notes to Pastor Katie or drop them off at the church office.

Sign up for Trunk or Treat

Last year, Trunk or Treat was one of our most diverse and well-attended events of the whole year, as we welcomed kids from our surrounding community, and had a ton of fun passing out candy, hosting a bounce house, and more. Sign up to help here or at the Connect Desk.

Youth Retreat

Our youth's fall retreat is coming up on Oct. 21-23rd, and we are still looking for a few more adult chaperones. You can also still invite Middle School and High School youth to attend-- it's not too late to sign-up! To get more info contact Jeremyand register a youth for the retreat here.

Become a Friend in Faith

Every student going through Confirmation is paired with an adult Friend in Faith, who supports and encourages them throughout their journey. To learn more about becoming a friend in faith or volunteering for Youth Ministry in other ways contact Jeremy

With thanks and hope,

And please continue to bring any food pantry staples that you can donate to the Mission Window on Sundays too to continue to help our food pantry partners around St. Louis.

Mission in Memory and Honor Dresser Build

Saturday, November 5 & Sunday, November 6

Honor someone you have lost or someone special to you by building and/or donating the funds for an Ikea dresser to go to Home Sweet Home. With your help, Home Sweet Home's furniture bank can provide a dresser for each child in the families that they serve.

Donations are appreciated but not required to build a dresser. The cost of a dresser kit is $60. Donations can be made via your Realm Account or by check with "Dresser Build" in the memo line. These IKEA dressers are easy enough to construct that two people can build one in one hour. Will you help provide storage for the children of Home Sweet Home this November? Click here to reserve your building time now!  Questions? Email Julie Sherwood.

Here's an Idea: Throw A Birthday Party for Home Sweet Home!

Megan Daniels just celebrated a birthday recently and instead of gifts for herself, she requested people purchase household items for Home Sweet Home. Below are pictures of her delivery to their warehouse in Brentwood. Got a birthday coming up and feel like you have everything you need? Consider collecting gifts for Home Sweet Home!

Project Hope Food Pantry Update and Volunteer Opportunity for Thanks

St. Andrew UMC took over the Project Hope Food Pantry when Bellefontaine UMC closed its doors in June.  Since that time, the number of families served per week has increased to 20 families. KUMC's food donations helped to make that possible...thank you.

Project Hope would like to extend an invitation to help provide a free Thanksgiving Dinner to families in the North County area and beyond.  This year the goal is to feed 1000 people.  Here is how you can help:

Donate the following items to the Mission Window at KUMC

  • boxes of stuffing (goal = 60 boxes)
  • large cans of green beans (Sam's/Costco size, goal = 10)

Volunteer:

  • Wednesday, Nov 23, 1 - 7 pm (set up and distribution of hot meals to food pantry families)
  • Thursday, Nov 24, 8 am - 1 pm (packing and delivery of meals)
  • Make a fresh dessert or donate a frozen turkey (Call Rob or Jennifer Proffitt to arrange pick-up)

Call Project Hope for more details and to sign up. Rob Proffitt (314) 603-4352 or Jennifer Proffitt (314) 603-8984

Into the Deep - Youth Retreat

October 21-23 at Camp Moval

KUMC youths are invited to go on a weekend retreat to Camp Moval, in Union, MO on Friday, October 21 to 9 am on Sunday, October 23.  Any 6th - 12-grade student may attend. They can also invite friends to come along for the fun too! The cost is $25 per student which includes lodging and five meals and snacks.

The theme is Into the Deep, and we will be getting real about what the Bible is, what it isn't, why it's so hard for us to read, and how we can get past the obstacles that prevent it from shaping our lives. Of course, we will also be spending a lot of time playing games, relaxing, etc.! Click here to register a Youth now on Realm!

Adult volunteers are urgently needed! There is no fee for adults. Email Jeremy to sign up as a volunteer and/or register as an adult/chaperone at the registration link. Even if you can only drive kids there, return them home, or stay Friday night only, it would be helpful to have you! If you register, Jeremy will assume you are in for the whole weekend as a volunteer unless you let him know otherwise!

Confirmation Classes Begin Sunday, October 30

All youth, 6th grade or older interested in joining this year's Confirmation group need to email Jeremy Melton to register now. The meeting time will be Sunday evenings from 6:45 -7:45 pm.

SPREAD THE WORD - VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON 10/30 - DONATE CANDY

What one can you do to help make this KUMC Community-wide event a success?

THE ONE

Sunday, October 30 at 10 am

Come to THE ONE, on the last Sunday of this month in the Sanctuary at 10 am. Donuts and Coffee will be available in the lounge thirty minutes before worship. At THE ONE we will be giving third graders and others a Bible of their very own in worship. If you are an adult who would like a Bible, please email Carol Fischer. We have Bibles for you too! Come celebrate with the whole church family!

A BIG THANK YOU GOES OUT TO: KUMC's Seekers Class for funding for this year's Bibles!

Bible Blessings

On Oct. 30th KUMC will be presenting children in 3rd grade and older with a Bible in worship. Scripture is where people of faith wrestle, question, learn and reflect. It's how we discover God's story, and encounter Christ's transforming love. Receiving your first Bible from a community of faith is such a meaningful moment, and our children's ministry needs your help. We are looking for people to write letters to be placed in the Bibles so that each child will get not only a Bible but a personal connection. The note could include just a few sentences about what the Bible means to you and what your hopes and prayers are for them as they read their new Bibles. If you are willing to write one of these Bible blessings, please contact Pastor Katie at [email protected]. If you know of a child or youth in 3rd grade or older who would like to receive a Bible contact Lisa Hendry, at [email protected].
