Kitten Season is Real

Hi, I'm Hayley, the Feline Care Manager at WCHS. Every spring, we see litter upon litter of kittens brought into the shelter. The flow of kittens lasts until late fall. I was asked to describe a typical day for me during this crazy time of year.

It’s 7 a.m. There’s a message from an animal control officer: She’s bringing 4 kittens to WCHS. I quickly figure out: What space is available here? How about in foster homes?

It’s the start of a typical day during “kitten season.”

After checking messages, it’s time for my daily census: Who got dropped off last night? How old is each kitten? What’s their health status? And the foster kitties – Who’s due for vaccines? I review the staff’s schedules and contact fosters to bring kitties in.

Now there are cat rooms to clean. I check as I disinfect: What supplies are we low on? I hop on Facebook to request supply donations, then dash off to care for one of our “bottle babies.” These newborn kittens need help eating and pooping every few hours!

As I sit down to dinner myself, a text comes in: A close-up of kitten poop. The sender and I discuss the finer details of feline fecal consistency to see if his foster kitty is okay.

What’s your part in all this? You and other donors are behind the bottles of formula feeding orphaned kittens, the doses of medicine saving their lives, and the fact that I and my colleagues get to spend our days helping vulnerable beings we love.

Will you give $250, $125, $75, or anything you can today to help our feline friends survive their first days and get the medical care they need?

Please help us raise $25,000 by June 30th to cover care for 270 kittens and 586 spay and neuter surgeries for kittens this season.

Your support means the world to me and to every kitten who will live a full life curled up in someone’s lap because of your big heart. Thank you for being part of WCHS.

With gratitude,

Hayley H
