The Kittens are Coming!
We've found some joy lately in photos and videos of kittens being silly in our volunteer foster homes, and we thought you might enjoy some kitten shenanigans, too! Check out the video, right.

Sweet Pea, the mama of the kittens in the video, arrived at the shelter pregnant and birthed eight kittens in the home of our foster parent, Anna. (That's her voice on the video.) This week, six of the eight kittens went up for adoption through our new appointment system, implemented to ensure social distancing and safe interactions between customers and staff.
Foster parents like Anna are essential partners in our lifesaving work, since newborn and nursing kittens -- as well as orphaned bottle babies, pets recovering from illness or surgery, or those stressed and in need of a shelter break -- often need a quiet foster home environment to thrive and/or recover.

Since March, roughly 70 percent of the animals at KHS have spent time in loving foster homes, and we are deeply grateful for these special humans!

Interested in adopting a kitten? More kittens will be arriving each week from foster care, and appointments fill up fast. There is a high demand for kittens, so plan ahead for the best chance at success! Details below.

PetsWALK Runs through June 30!
Make Your Pet a Star in our Photo Contests and Win Great Prizes!
When you join PetsWALK, you not only raise lifesaving funds for shelter pets, you get to make your pet a star in some of our fun photo contests and win prizes!

This week's contest for PetsWALK, sponsored by Poulsbo Animal Clinic , was to submit a photo of a "Best Quarantine Buddy." Here's quarantine buddy Finn, sunbathing before his walk with his owner, Linda. (He's also this year's PetsWALK spokespet, which can be exhausting, as you can see!)

This year's PetsWALK is a virtual event due to COVID-19, so you get to walk or run at your pace, and snooze in the sun in between activities just like Finn here -- we won't tell!

Best of all, your fundraising supports lifesaving veterinary care and shelter for homeless and hurting pets in our community. Register now!
Adorable Adoptable
Meet Hermione!
This long-haired gray tabby with striking green eyes will mesmerize you with her charm! She arrived at the shelter in need of tender loving care for her gorgeous coat, and now sports an endearing lion's cut with a sleek shave on her body and a poufy tail and legs. She's just adorable!

Hermione is a vocal kitty who greets her friends at the shelter with meows and purrs, and loves to rub against your legs when she wants to be petted. Make an appointment to meet Hermione and she'll bring some magic into your life!
Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Carrie Kale!
Carrie Kale is an active volunteer who has donated her time and talents to KHS for over four years. During this time, she has completed 798 hours of service and has volunteered in a variety of capacities within the organization. She is not only a regular dog walker, but also provides support for offsite adoptions and the transfer team.

During COVID-19, Carrie has demonstrated initiative and creativity by seeking ways to stay safe while also staying active in the KHS family.  While practicing social distancing and working outdoors, she has been assisting the maintenance team with weeding flower beds and general landscaping to help keep the KHS property looking great!  Carrie, pictured here with her dog Lilli, is a kind and dedicated team member and we
can't thank her enough for all she does for the animals and staff at KHS!
Staff Spotlight
Meet Dr. Melissa Kehl
This month’s staff spotlight is shining on Dr. Melissa Kehl, a KHS veterinarian who goes above and beyond every day to help pets in need.

Just recently, Dr. Melissa joined our Animal Control team in the field to help sedate and rescue an injured stray cat who was stuck in the wheel well of a car. With her help, the cat was removed and brought to KHS for surgery to repair several broken bones. It was a happy day when the cat, named Drifter, fully recovered and was adopted!

A former high school science teacher, Dr. Melissa has been on the team at KHS for four years. A ferry commuter from Vashon Island, she has slept at the shelter when snowstorms made it tough to get home -- and enjoyed how quiet the shelter can be in the middle of the night!

In addition to surgery and medical care, Dr. Melissa makes daily rounds to check on animals and gets to know them personally. In the photo, right, she's snuggling a stray dog named Honey, who didn't want to leave her arms.

Her favorite work at KHS? "I love the misfits we get -- the animals who seem to appreciate all of our care. They seem to know we are doing our best for them. I particularly like bad skin and old dogs."
"She has an amazing way with the animals- you'll often find her snuggling with
an older dog in their kennel after they first arrive, or eating her lunch on the floor with one of our more timid or fearful canine residents," said Dr. Jennifer Stonequist, KHS director of shelter medicine. "She is amazingly skilled and has a special knack for treating difficult, chronic skin cases. You may have recognized two of her most recent patients -- Rajah and Luna -- on our Facebook page!"

Thank you, Dr. Melissa, for all the tender care you provide to animals at KHS!
Community Spotlight
Haselwood Auto Group
Kitsap Humane Society extends a special thank you to Haselwood Auto Group, our Grand Shelter Sponsor!

Haselwood Auto Group loves animals, and they have put their care into action by making Kitsap Humane Society the charity beneficiary of their month-long summer "Drive for a Cause" events in 2018 and 2019, raising a whopping $139,000 for the animals in our care!

Their campaign for KHS was publicized throughout the region with TV, print and
online advertising and raised funds by
engaging the community: every time
customers purchased or serviced a car, a donation was made to KHS.

But that's not all. Haselwood also hosted several pet adoption events at their complex in Bremerton, which helped us match dozens of kittens and puppies with forever homes.

Thank you, Haselwood Auto Group, for all you do for KHS and the animals!
Kitsap Humane Society and PSE Team Up to Help Local Neighbors
Kitsap Humane Society has a Pet Food Pantry to support people who need help feeding their animals in times of difficulty. We don't want anyone having to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pets. The Pet Food Pantry is open daily from noon to 4 p.m.

Our Powerful Partner, Puget Sound Energy, is also reaching out to help people in need during the pandemic, offering payment options for those worried about paying their energy bills and making sure no one is disconnected during this challenging time. Details can be found at pse.com/paymentoptions .
Want to support our Pet Food Pantry with donations of pet food or supplies? Check out our Amazon Wish List below. You can also buy supplies from local merchants and drop them at the shelter. Thank you!
