It's National Foster a Pet Month!
As part of Petco Love's National Foster a Pet Month, we are on the lookout for new foster volunteers to join our lifesaving crew!

When you sign up to foster, who and how long you foster for is totally up to you. Any amount of time an animal spends in a foster home is beneficial, whether giving short-term kennel breaks to stressed dogs or raising kittens and puppies until they're old enough to be adopted!

"Even if you can't commit to something long-term, you can make a positive and lasting impact on an animal's life," said Holly Faccenda, KHS Foster Manager.

Dogs from Crowded Texas Shelter Find Homes in the PNW

Before coming to KHS, Arwen was taken in by Austin Animal Center in Texas. While Arwen was grateful to be sheltered, at 200 dogs over capacity Austin Animal Center didn't have the resources to find her a forever home in Texas. That's why we are so happy we can partner with shelters across the nation through our Rescue Me Transfer Program. Arwen and a few of her four-legged friends made the trek from Texas to Washington to join us here in Kitsap County where they awaited their adoption day.

After being checked in, attended to, and settled into her kennel, Arwen was adopted less than a week after arriving in the great PNW! We are so grateful to have played a role in Arwen's Happy Tail. Thank you to our wonderful Transfer Coordinator and our transfer volunteers, as well as our partners at Austin Animal Center for helping pets like Arwen!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Janna Greenroyd!
When Janna joined the KHS foster family in March of this year she jumped right into the wild, yet adorable, world of kitten fostering! Janna first thought of becoming a foster parent when her family adopted their last cat, “We got to meet his foster parent at the adoption event, and it was really inspiring to hear her talk about her experiences and to see how enthusiastic she was about fostering,” she said. “And with that, the seed was planted! I thought it would be really fun to be able to play with kittens every day and watch them grow.”

One of the things we appreciate most about Janna is how thoughtful and intentional she is. It’s clear how much she cares about her fosters and ensures their success now and in the future once they are in their forever homes! “I quickly realized that my role in these little animals' lives was bigger than just being a place for them to live for a few weeks. I get to be the human that taught them to trust, to give and receive love and snuggles, to teach them good habits and prepare them for finding their forever family.”

In the few months Janna has been fostering, she has fostered kittens who need additional socialization to boost their confidence and kittens with medical needs. “The first time one of my shy kittens finally came to me to snuggle up in my lap for a nap is a moment I will never forget. It’s an incredible feeling to know that because of me, this little kitten has learned that humans = love and safety.”
“I’m on my third litter of foster kittens now, and fostering just keeps getting better. Each day with my kittens is new and exciting and always so fulfilling. There is no way to have a bad day when you’re surrounded by tiny kittens and watching their crazy antics! Fostering is one of the best things I’ve ever done and I’m really grateful for the opportunity that KHS has given me to help animals and change lives.”

Janna has been one of the highlights of 2022 for us! She is positive, compassionate, and a joy to work with. We are so excited to watch her grow as a foster parent!

Meet Riah Sorn-ampai!
This month, put your paws together for one of our newest team members, Riah! Riah is our Shelter Operations Asisstant, meaning she does a little bit of everything from supporting our Director of Animal Welfare and our different coordinators, to overseeing all areas of the Pet Food Pantry program!

Just celebrating two months with Team KHS, her favorite part of working at the shelter? She shares, “I love being surrounded by folks who are so passionate about the work they do! The amount of love and care that goes into supporting the animals is truly astounding, and it’s inspiring being part of a team dedicated to enacting meaningful change within the community.”

“One of the coolest parts of my job is working on the Pet Food Pantry program. On average each month, Pet Food Pantry supports between 30-35 individuals, which is around 130-150 pets - and that equals to about 2,500 lbs of food being distributed! Our shelter relies heavily on in-kind donations for this critically-needed program and most of the food we provide to community members through this program comes directly from other members of our community."
"What this highlights for me is that we exist within a community that is ready to show up for one another and the animals and that KHS is offered the opportunity to simply act as a conduit for that support!”

Riah's manager shared, "There are not enough good things I can share about Riah. She's wonderful at everything, and I'm so glad she's a part of our team!"

While Riah and her partner have not yet adopted from KHS, they do share a dog named Max, who just celebrated his 8th birthday, and was adopted from Blue Mountain Humane in Walla Walla!

Thanks for being an amazing member of our team, Riah! You rock!
