President Amy has a MAJOR birthday on Tuesday, March 26. Kiwaniscope won't say which birthday this is, but, as a hint, do you know how many deadly sins there are? Hills in Rome? Days in a week? Happy birthday, Amy!

Tom Johnson and Carol have a wedding anniversary on Wednesday, March 27. Tom, you should think about celebrating with a trip somewhere special. Do you know anything about the Turks and Caicos Islands?

By Tom Glass

Nate Colman, a sophomore at Weston High School, is a Connecticut-based award-winning filmmaker with accolades for filmmaking, cinematography, writing, and directing.

Nate has produced many short films and documentaries. In 2021, he founded Crystal Lake Creatives, a film production company specializing in wedding films and documentaries. Crystal Lake Creatives won The Knot’s national “Best of Weddings” award in 2023 for their wedding filmmaking.

This spring, Crystal Hill Film will also produce "Maybe I’m a Monster," a psychological drama.

Nate Colman produced the documentary "Innocents Held Hostage: The Pawn Morad Tahbaz," a short documentary about Morad Tahbaz, a Weston, Connecticut resident, nature conservationist, and former Iranian hostage.

The film explores the past, present, and future of tensions between Iran and the United States and how that contributes to why Morad was taken hostage. The film includes an interview with Morad Tahbaz, who explains the situation and describes his heart-wrenching stories. The film also includes interviews with Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman Jim Himes, and New York Times White House Correspondent Michael Shear.

NEWS

Kiwanis will be a vibrant presence at the Memorial Day Weekend Fair again, as in the past 30-plus years, earning money to support Kiwanis community service activities.

The club board committed this past Tuesday evening to producing the food concession at the Hurlbutt Elementary School and Weston Intermediate School PTO event, providing the popular fair-goers menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, chips, and drinks. President-elect Tom Watson led discussions with the PTOs' 2024 committee, which newly this year insisted on the availability of menu selections that Kiwanis and our supplier could not commit to providing. Under the arrangement reached for this year, the PTO will allow purveyors of the other menu items to vend their food from trucks at the onion barn.

We will need all members on deck to staff this event. In addition to our food service, we'll actively promote the Weston Kiwanis Dog Jamboree on Saturday, September 7, 2024, and membership in Kiwanis.

DIVISION NEWS

DIVISION COUNCIL MEETING

President Amy and Bob Uzenoff represented Weston at Lieutenant Governor Karl's division meeting Sunday afternoon. We discussed many topics, including the growing membership and social and fellowship opportunities.

Lieutenant Governor Karl shared information from Kiwanis International on the availability of funding grants from the Kiwanis Children's Fund and plans to vote on a $25 dues increase at the international convention. If passed by two-thirds of the delegates, this would be the first due increase since 2015, yet comparable to peer service organizations.

You can see them all at the Kiwanis International Convention this year, Independence Weekend in Denver.

In 2015, Diana Nyad achieved her 35-year quest of becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida. She will inspire convention goers to navigate their own challenges and opportunities.
