LAST WEEKEND

RESERVOIR RUN FLYER DISTRIBUTION TEAM HITS THE ROAD

By Dan Gilbert

Team members distributed flyers at the Athletic Brewing Company’s Fairfield 5K (Saturday) and half marathon (Sunday) road races. Race organizers told us that approximately 4,500 runners attended the races. Team members placed flyers on over 1,700 vehicles' windshields.

Several Kiwanians who helped with the distribution are dealing with challenging medical issues e.g., surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritic knees, and fatigue from volunteering for many shifts over the Memorial Day Weekend Fair. But, they showed up and got the job done. As is typical for our club as we complete volunteer efforts at major community service event we began work on the next event.

On Saturday (l to r) Reed Ameden, Steve Thomas, Dan Gilbert, and Alex Burns distributed flyers at the Jennings Beach lot.

On Sunday Harry Spencer, Tom Johnson, and Dan Gilbert placed flyers on windshields at the Jennings Beach parking lot.

A special shout-out goes to Ed Hutchins who single-handedly covered cars parked at Penfield Beach.

DIVISION NEWS

THE KIWANIS CLUB OF DANBURY

Last Saturday, Danbury produced a successful bicycle safety rodeo, staffed with club members, Key Club members, Danbury social services, the Danbury Fire Department with a truck to touch.

The event took over a middle school parking lot, there was a carnival atmosphere with continuous lively music playing. Activities included registration with a raffle to win one of two free bicycles (see the nearby picture), helmet fitting (free helmet if needed, bicycle mechanical safety check and adjustment, if needed, a demonstration course with traffic cones, turns, traffic lights, safety signs, certificates of completion, activity books, goody bags, refreshments, a bouncy house and more.

Past Lieutenant Governor Paula Conte of The Kiwanis Club of Norwalk donated helmets and goody bags. Four or more Danbury police officers recently completed community policing training. They were on hand and continuously circulating on their bicycles. They explained to Bob Uzenoff that their participating in this bicycle safety event satisfied on of the requirements to complete their training.
