DID YOU KNOW?

The Kiwanis family includes members of all ages and abilities. In addition to Kiwanis clubs for adults who serve kids, we offer Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs. Our SLPs are Key Club International for high school students, Circle K International for college and university students, K-Kids for elementary school students, Builders Club for middle school students and Aktion Club for adults with disabilities.

SLPs are leadership and character-building programs hosted in a school or community agency and often sponsored by a Kiwanis club or another civic organization. Kiwanis International offers resources and support to help anyone open SLP clubs wherever there is a need and opportunity in their communities.

LAST WEEK

MEMBERS ELECT HARVEY LUFT DIRECTOR

Weston Kiwanis members elected Harvey Luft as director at the weekly breakfast meeting on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Harvey joins the club board of five officers and ten directors as a director. Harvey fills a vacancy on the board created when the annual club meeting for elections elected Amy Jenner (a director) to the position of president-elect.

The club board ensures smooth club operations, leads club initiatives, and creates and upholds the club’s vision — all with the club’s best interests in mind. Most of the board’s tasks are related to administration, decision-making, and strategic planning. Administrative tasks include:

  • Determining the good-standing status of members in accordance with Weston Kiwanis policy.
  • Setting an annual budget (before October 15 each year).
  • Assuring Weston Kiwanis complies with applicable governmental rules and regulations.
  • Overseeing the implementation of club policy.
  • Keeping Weston Kiwanis's strategic plan current.
  • Assuring Weston Kiwanis is meeting its financial obligations, including a standing financial review committee's annual review of financial statements.
  • Other duties as assigned to the board in Weston Kiwanis bylaws and policies.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER JOAN CLAYTON

Weston Kiwanis welcomes Joan Clayton to membership in the club. The club board admitted Joan to membership at the board's monthly meeting on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Michael Schwartz, Joan's husband, sponsored Joan.

Joan's interests as a member include supporting our youth and fostering community cohesiveness. Welcome, Joan!

OTHER BOARD NEWS

Recapping membership count for the year just closed; we welcomed 6 new members. Year-end membership on September 30 was 66 members, with a net loss of four members.

The board approved an administrative funds budget for 2023/2024 with a $1,645 deficit budget, reflecting lower income from lower dues (fewer members) and flat expenses. Treasurer Dan called our attention to the importance of continued income from Happy Bucks, which helps but does not offset a loss from breakfast operations.

At the November meeting, the treasurer plans to propose service fund income and expense budgets. The income budget will include a 2024 Memorial Day Weekend Fair food operations forecast. The board approved a $3,600 expenses budget for the Community Service Committee.

You can see more details from the board meeting in the minutes after they become available on the meeting's web page.
