Join Us! 9-8-8 Goes LIVE!
Hello Everyone,

On Thursday, November 30 (tomorrow), 9-8-8 officially goes live. It is an honour to be one of 40 partners across Canada to engage in this important work.

Suicide affects people of all ages and backgrounds. An average of 4,500 people across Canada die by suicide each year—approximately 12 people per day. 9-8-8 was created to make it as simple as possible for people to get the support they need, no matter who they are or where they are in Canada.

The 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline is a new, easy-to-remember, three-digit helpline that will provide urgent, 24/7 live support by phone and text to people across Canada. Suicide prevention is the primary focus of 9-8-8, but no one who contacts the helpline will be turned away. As the only 9-8-8 partner in Manitoba, Klinic is a part of a network of local, provincial and territorial, and national crisis lines across the country whose responders take 9-8-8 calls.

Like all our lines, we will have trained responders to offer guidance when callers need us the most. There is no wrong way to ask for help – whether someone reaches out to 9-8-8 or another crisis line, someone will be there to offer support when it’s needed. We encourage you to share this information within your network and community to help us reach folks who may benefit from this service. 9-8-8 information can be found on our website here. Together, we can make a difference and create a community where mental health is prioritized.

I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to Suzanne, Bill, Richelle, Ikram and the entire team for all the work put into this project. Klinic now runs 10 crisis and support and distress lines, which is a testament to our amazing staff team and the incredible work being done every single day. Thank you so much and congratulations on this momentous occasion.

To celebrate, I invite folks to our official event launch! Please join us if you can.

Reducing the Risk for those with Food Allergies in the Workplace

Please join us for a virtual lunch and learn on Wednesday, December 6 from 12:00-12:30pm.
A TEAMS invite will be sent out to all staff.

Lisa Begg (Dietician) in collaboration with the Workplace Health and Safety Committee will be presenting on Reducing the Risk for those with Food Allergies in the Workplace.

You will learn about:
  • Identifying Common Food Allergens
  • Spotting signs of an allergic reaction and what to do
  • Reducing risk for allergic reactions in the workplace

If you have allergies, and even if you don’t, please feel free to attend this informative 20 min presentation with time at the end for your thoughts and ideas – We would like to get your input on how to make Klinic a safer space for staff with food allergies!

Also check out the upcoming Klinic Weeklies for education and tips on food allergy awareness, and be on the lookout for new posters in the Lunchrooms and Kitchenettes on wiping down surfaces and food prep tips to reduce allergen exposure for those at risk, and how to respond to an allergic reaction!

Klinic's Fun Whiteboard Discussion Series
As you may have seen, we have a lovely whiteboard on the second floor beside our beloved sustenance machines (vending machines). We have been posting fun topics / questions for all staff and volunteers to respond to, in hopes of stirring up some friendly conversations and engagement.

For October, we want to know: What snacks/treats do you eat when stressed?

As always, please be respectful and kind when writing your suggestions on the whiteboard. Please keep it PG also :)

From August until early October, we wanted to know what kind of Klinic merch would you rep / wear? We got some amusing and unique responses! Thank you all who contributed! FYI, we are unable to get Klinic jock straps made. Sorry to disappoint everyone :(

Changes to the Masking Requirement
A message from Ayn regarding mask requirements:

Hello folks. I am sharing with you a memo received this afternoon from Shared Health outlining updated guidelines for respiratory virus this fall.

The quick take aways are that effective Oct 18th:
  • masks will be required by healthcare providers during direct patient care interactions
  • masks must be work by individuals who are symptomatic
  • masks are recommended (although not required) in most other settings,
  • staff no longer need to test / wait five days to return if they are ill as long as they are feeling well enough to work and are afebrile (without fever).

As we have just received this guidance, we are seeking additional clarity on exactly which staff and areas the mask requirement impacts beyond providers during appointments with clients. We will share updates as we have them.

Thank you. Take good care,
Ayn
