Kings Professional Development Day

Last Friday, October 18, while our students got the day off, our teachers were in classrooms learning new things.

The PD Day focused on strengthening literacy instruction across all content areas. Building on their August 13 PD Day work, teachers collaborated in vertical content teams to review literacy standards specific to their subjects and grade levels.

The session emphasized literacy as a shared responsibility, leading teachers to develop concrete plans for new instructional practices to implement in their classrooms. Teachers will reconvene at the February 14 PD Day to share their results and experiences with these implementations. This ongoing professional learning initiative aims to enhance both literacy instruction and the District's Power 5 skills development throughout grade levels.

During PD Day, Kings' Administrators hosted a concession stand featuring coffee, water, donuts, and bagels for donations to the American Cancer Society. They raised $548 that will be donated in memory of Christy VonAllmen and Kevin Klies. Both are former Kings teachers who passed away this past summer from cancer.

KHS Hosts All Branches of Military

Kings High School hosted an All Branches Military Presentation on Tuesday, October 22 for students interested in learning more about military careers.

Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine recruiters shared their personal stories and experiences, along with speaking on topics such as basic training, job training, credits, credentials, and college degrees. Additionally, they also spoke about taking the ASVAB, a standardized test that helps determine a person's eligibility and suitability for military service.

Students also spent time in an Open House format getting to talk to the Branches that were most interesting to them. Each year Kings has about 10-12 seniors who make a military decision for either career or college purposes.

KHS will host an ASVAB test for any interested juniors and seniors on Friday, November 22, 2024.

Elementary Color Run/Fun Run Fundraisers

Each of our three elementary buildings have been having a lot of fun lately! Each participated in a color or fun run to raise funds to support their schools.

Both South Lebanon Elementary and Kings Mills Elementary hosted a Color Run which is a fun run with an added burst of color. Used as a fundraiser, students earned donations for each lap they took, collectively working together to reach their school's fundraising goal.

Both schools crushed their fundraising goal! KME brought in $33,221 and SLE raised $31,000.

J.F. Burns Elementary set a goal for their Fun Run at $35,000. This year, they surpassed their goal by over 30% raising $45,985!

In each building, the students were given incentives to raise money for their laps. Some incentives included Kona Ice, a Silly String Showdown, or to paint their principal. The money raised at these events is used to fund each building's PTO budgets so that they can continue to assist with field trips, author visits, program visits, teacher grants, and more.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who make these events possible and help our schools!

Meal Assistance Available for Students

The Kings Local School District encourages all families to submit an application for free- or reduced-price meal eligibility regardless of family income. Students will qualify for free or reduced lunches if the household income falls within the limits of the Federal Income Guidelines.

Students who qualified last year are required to complete a new application each year to extend their eligibility. Parents or Guardians will be responsible for paying for any charges that incur until the free or reduced meal application is fully processed and notification of eligibility is determined.

Free and Reduced Meal Applications can be obtained in the front office of each school building, as well as the Kings website. Parents can also apply for the program online at https://payschoolscentral.com. Check your eligibility by completing an application TODAY.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
