Attendance and Academic Success

The academic success of every student at York Academy is important to us, and arriving to school on time regularly is critical to that success. Because of the Academy's commitment to quality education, we are concerned when a student is tardy or misses school for any reason.

When students are absent less, their reading skills and grades tend to improve. They also feel more connected to their school community and form strong friendships. This helps them to be more engaged in class, accomplish their academic goals and stay on track for graduation.

Both parents and students are responsible for regular school attendance. We understand that occasionally a student must be absent from school for reasons which are acceptable to the school and the courts, as listed the Handbook and Code of Conduct . These situations include illness, medical appointments, observances of religious holidays or the death of a family member. Please be aware that a written note must always be provided to the school in person or through our website within three days of any absence . If you have questions, please contact the attendance office at (717) 900-5001, ext. 2104. Thank you!
Student Spotlight

Congratulations to second-grader Miles, who was chosen as our "Student Spotlight." Miles was nominated for embodying the  IB attribute  of being caring. Caring individuals show empathy, compassion and respect. They have a commitment to service and act to make a difference in the lives of others and the world around them.

Even though he wasn't asked to, Miles cleaned the trash off the tables at lunch. He was not looking for recognition, but said that he wanted to leave the cafeteria better than he found it. Miles always leads by example and does it with a smile. Keep it up, Miles!

Staff Shoutout

Upper School math teacher, Ms. Rachel Why, was nominated for displaying the IB attribute of being caring. Caring individuals show empathy, compassion and respect. They have a commitment to service and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the world around them.

Ms. Why has exemplified commitment towards her students in the secondary mathematics classroom, particularly with students who struggle to complete tasks independently without reassurance along the way. She pushes students out of their comfort zones and establishes a classroom of rigor and respect. Despite the challenges Ms. Why may face in the classroom, she shows patience with her students and maintains a positive attitude about her role as an educator in their lives. She is also a team player with her fellow staff members, offering support on a regular basis. Thank you for being so caring and encouraging, Ms. Why!

Second Grade Hero Fair

Our second-graders have been studying the role heroes play and how they positively impact people during the IB unit “Where We Are In Place and Time.” They've learned that anyone can be heroic by the actions they take and choices they make.

At the "Hero Fair," nine volunteers spoke to the students about their jobs and how what they do for a living makes a difference in the community. The students listened, took notes and practiced being inquirers. Thank you again to these knowledgeable heroes for sharing their time and enthusiasm! Click here to view some photos from the event on Facebook.
Third Grade Funky Socks for School

Our third-graders have been learning about how important their education is to their future, especially when it comes to becoming well-rounded citizens. They've also been studying how businesses and communities operate differently around the world. This includes how other students their age go to school in their own communities.

Students were introduced to Mark, and they are beyond excited to help ensure he can get the education he needs to be successful. To raise the funds needed to assist him with his schooling, they are selling "funky socks" through Thursday, November 14. Click here to get your socks now and make a difference for Mark!
The Golden Music Stand

Mr. Michael, our Instrumental Music Teacher, loves to inspire and recognize his students. Last month, he unveiled the Golden Music Stand. It will serve to symbolize exceptional work in instrumental music. The stand will be awarded monthly as a sort of trophy to a "musician of the month" in each ensemble (Band, Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra and Wind Ensemble). Students who are consistently prepared, on time and perform assigned music at a high level are eligible to win the award. Winners earn the right to use the Golden Music Stand exclusively for an entire month of lessons and rehearsals before it moves on to another hard-working ensemble member. Mr. Michael wants all of his students to know that they are capable of “earning gold.” Congratulations to the inaugural winners: Aviana, Sameera, Lily and Mia!
