As we enter the third week of lent let us continue to be mindful of the significance of the season and our commitment to the Gospel values of: almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. May our lenten sacrifice strengthen our relationship with Jesus Christ as we move closer to Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

As we conclude our final week before spring break, the school remains a very busy place and there is much to be appreciated and acknowledge:
  • Congratulation to Mr. Darrell Hall who was inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame last week. Unfortunately, Mr. Hall was not there to receive his award as he was invited, for the 5th year in a row, to be a guest speaker at the prestigious Los Angeles Religious Education congress.
  • Congratulations to the many students in Gr. 8-12 who achieved honor roll status during term 1. Our hope is that you continue to provide your best effort in all that you do.
  • Good luck to Ms. Webber and the entire cast and crew of our drama production: The Importance of Being Earnest at the Shadbolt Theatre on March 3-5. I would ask that you please support our students by attending the show.
  • Congratulations to all of our winter athletic teams and their coaches. Our wrestling team recently captured the girls provincial title and the over combined provincial championship - for the 3rd year in a row! Special congratulations to coaches Mr. Doug Corbett and Mr. Joe Adams. Our JV boys basketball team, our boys and girls curling team, and our field lacrosse team are all competing in provincials this week. Our SR boys basketball team will be doing so next week. We are very proud of our accomplishments and wish all the best to our coaches and athletes.
  • Please pray for all the teachers and students involved with our overnight Gr. 11/12 retreats which take place the week following spring break.
  • Re-registration for students currently in Gr. 8-11 is underway. This is a big job for our front office staff and your prompt response is essential in our planning for the 2016-17 school year. If you should have any concerns or questions please contact our main office. I plan to make myself available (by appointment) over spring break if you need to speak with me.
Have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing spring break. God bless you.

Finishing the Journey

As we approach the halfway point in our Lenten journey, like many New Year's resolutions, our commitments or promises of what we would do or give up during Lent may have given way to the realities of our day to day lives.

I have been following a Lenten series on the Dynamic Catholic website.  These one minute videos give food for thought each day.  In considering where I am failing to meet the commitments for Lent which I made on Ash Wednesday, one video message that has stayed with me is the examination of my priorities.  The presenter said if I look at my calendar and my credit card bills, it will be very obvious what my priorities are - and it may surprise me.  What I noticed was that I hadn't watched all the videos which meant I wasn't even finding that one minute - one minute - even though they were very inspirational.   How is that possible that I didn't find that time?

In typical human nature, I got down on myself.  Someone much wiser than I reminded me that God's love is unconditional (and undeserved!). He loves us in spite of our disobedience, our weakness, our sin and our selfishness.  I sat with that thought for a while.  It really does bear remembering.  There is a comfort in knowing that on our journey through life God is with us through all our triumphs and our failures.
Have faith and hope on this Lenten journey.
Live, Jesus, in our hearts forever.

President

Strategic Planning Process

The St. Thomas More Collegiate Board of Directors has commenced the development of a new Strategic Plan for the school.  It is important the Plan be developed through a consultative process with all stakeholders in the STMC community being invited to participate.   Over the next few weeks, you will receive an invitation to be part of the process helping us design our next Strategic Plan by weighing in on what you think STMC's priorities and goals should be to lead us through the next 3-5 years.  Thank you in advance for your time and commitment to STMC.

Consider becoming the new Captain of the Knight Club Uniform Sales!

There are always lots of volunteers to assist and finances are handled by the PA so you don't have to worry about accounting. It's all about getting the clothes to the kids!

If you are interested, now is the time to let us know!  There is lots of time for training and to get help from outgoing Captains Tonya and Mona.  To volunteer or get more information please contact Mona at mona@sourcewest.ca or Tonya at:

Who are you most inspired by and why?
Emma Ciprian featured by the Hyack Ambassador Pageant

"The person who inspires me, aside from my parents of course, is my drama teacher, Ms. Julia Webber. She is a loving mom to her daughter, a wonderful teacher, a talented director and the woman who inspired me to continue developing my dream of theatre through her constant and endless devotion to theatre and her theatre students. I'm so glad I've had the opportunity of having Ms. Webber as my theatre teacher and director throughout my years of high school." Emma Ciprian

"My dad is a great coach, we all adore him," said Ciara. "We want to impress him on what we've learned and what we can do... We went on a trip to a meet on the Island and all the kids were calling him 'Dad.'"
Caileen agrees.

"It's fun. It's definitely a different experience to be coached by someone else, but I love having my Dad as coach. I feel he understands what I'm thinking, and works with me on improving every day."
