September 11, 2022

Dear SEA Families,

It is amazing to think that it has been twenty-one years since the events of September 11th unfolded. All of us recall that day- and the days to follow- in different ways. I was a newly-minted police cadet and also in my first few weeks as a student at the University of Delaware. That morning, I had two classes that went mostly uninterrupted.

After leaving campus, I went to the police station to get ready for my shift. When I arrived, I found my colleagues, still in shock, watching the news together in silence. That day, our radio and dispatch center remained mostly quiet as the entire country was doing the same thing we were- watching the aftermath with family and friends. As we now know, the world forever changed that day. The days and weeks to follow were uncertain and uncomfortable. For several weeks after 9/11, we were called to respond to many homes and businesses too afraid to open their own mail as they feared there were poisonous chemicals in their letters and packages.

There was a special period of time, after the tragedies of 9/11, that our country came together as one. I recall strangers approaching my colleagues and me to thank us for being the people who ran to trouble and not away from it. Communities united in prayer to remember the lives of all who were lost.

In keeping with our 2022-2023 Catholic School theme, ‘Being Family’,  we must continue to deepen our ties together at SEA as one strong, Holy Cross community. On the anniversary of this solemn occasion in our Nation’s history, we should also recall the words of our founder- Blessed Basil Moreau: “The activity of an individual will help the community, and the activity of the community will, in turn, help each individual.” Let us never forget the lives that were lost and the many lives that were forever changed that day.

and the activity of the community will, in turn, help each individual.

Linked here, please review the Academy’s 2022-23 handbook. Written for students and their caretakers, the Student Handbook outlines the expectations, policies, practices, and procedures which guide us in our daily activity.

Our history of developing well-educated boys of character is a result of the successful collaboration between families and school staff. We require that all families read and discuss the handbook with their sons. Please contact us for help navigating any difficult topics. We appreciate your partnership.

If your Lancer is waiting for a uniform 'Quarter Zip' pullover, please feel free to send him to school in his uniform black crewneck SEA gym sweatshirt on the chillier days to come before winter uniform officially begins on Monday, 10/17.

The school uniform connects our students to the Congregation of Holy Cross and decades of proud and faithful St. Edmond’s alumni. Wearing the uniform is a sign of belonging, representing our connection to the past, our commitment to each other, and our role as representatives of the school to the broader community. Thank you for your understanding. We are a team, and together we should look the part!

In keeping with our goal to strengthen the home-to-school partnership, we want to add clarification on the best means for communicating with your sons’ teacher(s) as questions arise this year. The best means to communicate with a teacher at SEA is first via email. You can find a complete list of faculty and staff email addresses here, or email a teacher via Gradelink. Please allow faculty and staff 24-48 hours to respond (though most respond more quickly!), as they are working with our young Lancers throughout the day. If you need to communicate an attendance adjustment for your student, please email Thank you! We look forward to an excellent year!

We are grateful that we are able to begin the school year with the benefit of gained knowledge about best practices to mitigate Covid-19, and clear guidelines for how to proceed when we have positive cases.

- Vaccines remain the most important defense against severe illness.

- Routine asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended.

- If COVID-positive, please isolate for 5 days then return masked for the next 5 days.

- Please inform Nurse Kaddy Turner of all positive cases.

- Quarantine is no longer recommended for those exposed to COVID.

- Masks are recommended after an exposure, with testing on the 5th day after exposure.

- Testing is available to students at anytime.

- Masking is optional for students and staff.

- Hand hygiene remains our best defense against the spread of germs.

- If sick in any way, please stay home.

Please submit prayer intentions to Mrs. Peggy Manalo. If you are interested in a Mass being offered for a deceased loved one, please contact Mr. Bill D'Amato.
