Dear LNC Families,
This semester brought a greater sense of normalcy as our students returned to five day/week, in-person learning. I am happy to report that it has been a great semester. Every day that I see our students engaged in a variety of activities and actively learning in-person with their teachers and peers, I am thankful.
This first semester brought many accolades to all three of our schools with the elementary and middle schools being recognized as top performers in the state (our high school has been nationally ranked as a top school for the past seven years). In addition to these successes, one additional goal that we will be continuing to work towards throughout the 2021-2022 school year is reengaging our families and coming back together as a community.
In an attempt to have all stakeholders find a place of community and belonging, LNC has/will be offering a variety of different opportunities such as:
- Coffee Chats (in-person/virtual…we encourage those who can attend in-person to do so. It is a chance to meet other LNC families, ask questions and there is usually great coffee/snacks courtesy of our PTO)
- Athletic Boosters Meetings (in-person)
- PTO meetings
- Board of Education Meetings (both in-person/virtual)
- Day of Service & other volunteer opportunities (in-person)
- LNC Royal Golf Outing
- Community Spirit Night (Spring 2022)
- Bulls, Boots & BBQ Celebration (mark your calendars…April 2, 2022 at Rural Hill; more info to come)
Check our master calendar for the details. We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

As the year draws to a close, we would like to extend our sincerest expression of gratitude to the 608 families who supported our Elevate capital campaign to improve LNC’s main campus. Collectively, these families contributed nearly $1.8 million dollars since July 1, 2019! With this partnership, we accomplished five of the six Elevate goals:
- New track, field and press box;
- Remodeled middle school for increased school security and additional instructional space;
- Improved campus drive and middle school/events parking lot.
We love matching funds! We receive thousands of dollars every year in matching funds from local employers. Check here or with your employer to see if they offer this powerful perk and if not, customize this letter to ask them to consider matching your gift.
Need an end of the year tax write-off? LNC is a 501(c)3 organization, making gifts tax deductible.* And, last year the IRS allowed taxpayers to deduct a certain amount of charitable giving even if filers chose the standard deduction. For 2021, the IRS raised that allowed amount. Read more here. IMPORTANT: If you wish to make a year-end donation by check, we must have your check by the close of school next Monday, December 20, or make an online donation anytime before December 31.
Finally, to incentivize and reward giving, we created some nifty campaign perks. Check here to learn how you can skip carpool, celebrate your sophomore, junior or senior as they graduate from a premium suite, add your family and children’s names to the permanent Knights Appreciation Wall and more!
*Always consult your tax professional for guidance based on your personal situation.

On Friday, October 29 LNC K-12 students dedicated a portion of their day to helping improve life for the people living in Nicaragua. As they rotated through three stations, students learned how their efforts helped the Nicaraguan people, prepared the food packets and finally composed a message of care and hope for the Nicaraguan recipients. During the two-hour service experience, students had the opportunity to learn and serve alongside their fellow students from all three schools.

Some students chose to serve off campus at a charity of their choice for the entire day. Pictured here are LNC HS National Honor Society and Key Club members.

Congratulations to LNC's Head Football Coach, Bob McKay, who was awarded Charlotte Touchdown Club’s regional High School Football Coach of the Year award at the 27th Annual Bronco Nagurski Awards Banquet on December 6. Award criteria is based on character and integrity, sportsmanship, responsibility and excellence both on and off the field. We are so proud of Coach McKay and the LNC Athletic Department for living our school motto of "Together we learn, lead and serve."
An additional fun fact about the banquet: Coach Shane Beamer (head coach at University of South Carolina) was the Keynote Speaker at the banquet. Coach Beamer was a senior HS football player on Coach McKay’s team the first year McKay ever coached while in graduate school at Virginia Tech. Coach Beamer started his speech by recognizing the full circle moment of delivering the address at this prestigious event where one of his high school coaches received Coach of the Year honors.

PTO LUNCH PROGRAM
The PTO is happy to be able to offer new lunch options this school year that have been very popular. Lunch orders are placed at www.orgsonline.com. For information and/or directions on how to set up an account or place your order, follow this link. Here is the lunch ordering schedule for the remainder of the school year:
|
|
HELP!
The PTO lunch program is completely staffed by volunteers. We appreciate the families who support our efforts by serving lunches and we would love to have you join them. This is a vital fundraiser for the PTO in support of the entire school and a service that supports our families by providing hot lunches for their kids each day. The kids are the reason we do it and YOU are the reason it works. Select your volunteer day below.
|
|
You don't have to limit your service to the school your child attends; ES and MS parents can volunteer at another school to familiarize themselves with the school their student will be attending soon.
Thank you

SAFETY @ LNC IS OUR #1 PRIORITY
|
|
|
INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES
In the event of inclement weather, LNC will announce any decision to cancel or delay school through a number of channels including:
-
Local TV affiliates WSOC (ABC), WBTV (CBS), WCNC (NBC) and FOX 46 and they will broadcast our information.
-
Email and text using the contact information that we have on file for each student. Please use this form to notify the school if any of your family’s contact information has changed.
- Schoology through LNC2HSP, LNC2MSP, LNC2ESP and the “class of” groups. Be sure you are joined to your school’s LNC2 parent group!
- Twitter using our handle @LNCharter
-
Website www.lncharter.org
Decisions regarding the closing of school or implementing a delayed start time will be made by 5:30am and are based on weather conditions in our immediate school area and are not necessarily connected to the decisions that other schools make regarding delays and cancellations. This point is worth mentioning as some incorrectly assume that LNC is closed whenever the local public school makes the decision to cancel school. Please note that we do not contact the local news stations in the event that school remains open.
The safety of our students and families is our highest priority so we will not hesitate to cancel or delay school should the need arise.
|
|
|
|
EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES
If there were an emergency situation involving McGuire Nuclear Station, Lake Norman Charter would be contacted by county emergency management officials. Not all emergencies would require LNC to evacuate. In the event that an emergency requires us to evacuate our campus, LNC will contact parents via email, text and Schoology and post that information to our Twitter page and our website.
Every LNC carpool should determine their designated emergency contact responsible for picking up students if LNC is instructed to evacuate its campuses. Each carpool's designated emergency contact should utilize the current carpool pattern when entering the school. Make sure you post your carpool number/MS PMK numbers prominently in your windshield. In the event of an emergency, you can anticipate traffic delays in the area. The Huntersville Police Department will be directing traffic in and around our campuses. LNC staff will be positioned to assure a safe and expeditious evacuation. We will make every attempt to evacuate as safely, quickly and orderly as possible.
Once you pick up your student you should report to UNC Charlotte. You should not return home after picking up your student. More information is available on the Duke Energy website.
PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL AS WE WILL NEED TO KEEP OUTGOING LINES OPEN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. We understand your need to find out about your students' safety. We will take every possible step to assure your students' safety until someone arrives.
Your student will be bringing home a brochure from Duke Energy with instructions on how to obtain more information about the evacuation process.

Huntington Learning Center is a strong supporter of Lake Norman Charter and we are proud to partner with them in helping our students achieve academic success. They offer discounts to LNC families. Please reach out to them with questions about how they can help your student.

2022-2023 School Year Calendar
The calendar for the 2022-2023 school year is available here. Please keep the school calendar in mind when you are planning time away, particularly at the beginning of the school year. As in years past, the majority of our students have their first day of school on a Thursday (August 11, 2022) with our 5th and 9th grade students attending their first day one day prior (August 10, 2022) allowing us to focus on them exclusively as they learn their new school. It is very important that all of our students attend that first day of school as student enrollment is critical to ensuring that students are engaged with their teacher and curriculum in order to be successful from day one.

Congratulations to Junior Maya Dabney for winning a National Gold Medal for her printmaking artwork “A Dream as Beautiful as You" from the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition! This competition is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens and is judged in the areas of originality, technical skill and emergence of personal voice or vision. A National Gold Medal is the highest honor for any creative teen.

Principal Smith Appointed to PEPSC
Congratulations to LNC HS principal Mr. Smith who was appointed to the Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission for a 2-year term beginning this fall! The purpose of the Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission or PEPSC, is to independently advise North Carolina’s School Board of Education (SBE) on matters involving setting standards for educators in our state, including educators’ preparation, licensure, continuing education and conduct. The addition of Mr. Smith to the PEPSC will undoubtedly help the organization’s efforts in continuing to establish high standards for state educators to benefit the students of North Carolina. Follow Mr. Smith on Twitter @CSmithGoBlue and on his blog at blogofcraigsmith.blogspot.com.

Immunizations
Is your child up to date on their immunizations? It may seem early to be thinking about 7th grade or 12th grade immunizations requirements, but your child may be receiving immunizations that will be required for these milestones at some time during this next year at their annual physical. We ask that you make sure they are up to date on their immunizations and provide a new immunization record to the school.
The North Carolina General Statutes (G.S. 130-A-152(a)) require immunizations for every child present in this state. Every parent or guardian is responsible for ensuring that their child(ren) receives the required immunizations. Please look over the immunize.nc.gov website for information on the required immunizations for all school-aged children.
If you have any questions, please contact your campus registrar.

Educator of the Year
Ms. Jordan Walker, LNC 2nd grade teacher, was presented with an award naming her a Lake Norman Educator of the Year by Huntersville Mayor Melinda Bales and Bill Russell, president of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Walker’s students were able to witness their teacher receiving this special award from our community and when asked by Mayor Bales how they would describe Ms. Walker they answered, “Ms. Walker is kind and generous,” “Ms. Walker helps me with problems I don’t understand,” and “Ms. Walker is filled with love.” Congratulations Ms. Walker!

Honor Roll
Congratulations to the students on the LNC Honor Roll for the first quarter, 2021-2022.
|
Vaccination Events
Beginning in April, 2021, Lake Norman Charter opened its doors to offer COVID and flu vaccinations to the school and Mecklenburg County community. As the opportunities for different ages of students to receive vaccinations changed, we responded by showing age-appropriate movies, offering balloon animals courtesy of the MS Spanish teacher, Mr. Walker, and visits from Theo, an emotional support dog owned by ES Principal, Ms. Holland.
|
LNC will host additional vaccination events in 2022! From January 11 through April 5, COVID and flu immunizations will be given on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.

Student Information Changes
Have you moved this year, changed your phone number or email address or added someone to your carpool or the list of people picking up your student? If so, please let the school know so we can update our records for your child.
All address, email, phone number and emergency contact changes can be communicated to the school using an easy to complete Student Information Update google form. Using this form ensures your updated information gets sent to all staff members who need it. Sharing this information in a timely manner will eliminate a gap in communications being sent to you as stakeholders in the LNC family. This form can be reached via the hyperlink above or on our website under the About Us tab.
