Craig Smith, HS Principal and Marcus Funchess, HS Assistant Principal: "We opened up the school year with a minor change to our bell schedule, but hopefully with a huge positive impact. After reviewing feedback from stakeholders and with full-support of our faculty, we reduced our seven class periods and reallocated that time to extend our lunch period. This resulted in increasing our lunch-time by almost 40% to help support the School-Life Balance of our students and teachers, which is one of our Strategic Areas of Focus. Furthermore, for the first time in LNC HS history, our final exams will count 20% of the student's final grade, compared to the 25% previously valued."
Cherié Graham, MS Principal and Brian Bauer, MS Assistant Principal: “Looking back to the first semester, we are most proud of both our students and teachers for growing so significantly, especially in Math. We went from 79% to 88% proficient in one school year, which is an amazing feat. We are back to business now after our holiday break and we commit to maintaining our focus—growing our students academically to ready them for high school and beyond.”
Michelle Holland, ES Principal and Melanie Latza, ES Assistant Principal: "We are speechless...a dream has become a reality as we have risen together and are now in our new home! As we ring in the New Year with the lottery before us, I want to make sure we always keep our positive school culture and family-feel that was started three years ago with just 300 students and their parents. Those first second graders are now our fourth graders! There is an excitement in the air as we grow our school family next fall with the addition of one classroom per grade level. Building relationships with all stakeholders will continue to be our focus while we watch our youngest Knights learn, lead and serve."

Remember, families have until December 2021 to pay off their pledge and they may do so in a lump sum at any point in that two-year period.

Congratulations to the 2020 Top Seniors! These students, who were nominated by HS teachers, represent LNC's motto to lead, learn and serve every day in the classroom and with their extracurricular activities in the community. We are proud to honor them with a feature in the Yearbook and individually at Senior Award Night. The 5th Annual MS Father/Daughter dance will be help on Thursday, February 13 at Magnolia Woods: 12125 Statesville Rd, Huntersville from 6:30-8:30pm. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!!! The ES PTO is rolling out the red carpet for our 3rd Annual Father/Daughter Dance! Please save the date for Saturday, February 29 from 6:30-8:30pm in the HS Multipurpose Room for a "Star-Studded" night of food, fun, and of course dancing! Board-led Committees - Global Diversity and Inclusion
The Global Diversity and Inclusion (GD&I) committee has been busy with many events and initiatives this year. Teachers and students at all three schools have been planning and participating in activities that help us expand our awareness, appreciation and understanding of different cultures and traditions. 

At the ES, students participated in a random acts of kindness initiative where they opted to do kind things for others. Before the winter break, Ms. DeVoe also had her art students create ornaments representing students’ unique cultures and traditions for display on a huge Diversity Tree. In April, the ES will host an anti-bullying presentation made available through a grant by the Arts Foundation. 

At the MS, students continue to participate in monthly Drop Everything and Talk (DET) chats that provide resources and discussion questions about diversity-related topics. Our digital citizenship lessons have been revamped to incorporate more activities and conversations related to difference, social justice, bias and other similar topics. A group of MS teachers also attended a Facing History and Ourselves workshop about how to push back against antisemitism in modern times. 

At the HS, the ELA department formed a partnership with the Stan Greenspon Center for Peace and Social Justice. About 100 students participated in a presentation about the Partisan Movement during WWII and then participated in follow up conversations about how words and beliefs can lead to biased and hateful acts. There will also be a women’s panel in April, making this the second year students have the opportunity to attend this event. A group of HS teachers also plan to attend a workshop in February about incorporating GD&I-related activities into all subject areas.

Finally, we are hosting a school-wide Mix It Up At Lunch Day on February 19. Students at all three schools will change who they sit with during their lunch period and participate in activities before and after the event. Conversation prompts will be provided to get kids talking to peers with whom they might not interact on a regular basis.
LNC New Staff Members
We are excited to introduce two new staff members who recently joined the LNC family: Mrs. T'aaron Riggins as the newest HS Counselor (student assignments A-G) and Mr. Chris Gugliuzza as the new Assistant Facilities Director. Please help us in welcoming our newest staff, as we are excited to have them as part of the LNC family!
PTO Meeting/HS Principal's Coffee Chat
The PTO is a great way for parents to get involved with LNC! We invite you to join us at our next PTO meeting on Monday, February 3 at 6:30pm in the HS Multipurpose Room. This PTO meeting is combined with the February HS Principal's Coffee Chat. This is a great opportunity to come hear Mr. Smith and Mr. Funchess talk about the HS and also get your LNC PTO news at the same time.

Looking for Bus Drivers with CDL
We are reaching out to the LNC community in search of bus drivers for our spring sports season which starts mid-February. Through Invest in Excellence and parent participation, LNC purchased 4 buses this summer and now we are in need of drivers to transport our middle and high school students to their sporting events. If you or someone you know is interested in driving this spring, please contact Athletic Director, Matt Schlegel ( mschelegel@lncharter.org) for more information. All drivers must already have their school bus CDL with endorsements and will receive compensation per ride.

LNC Band Get a New Name
The LNC Pep Band is now named Knight Watch. After two rounds of voting and a close decision, the students got their new name! Come see the Knight Watch play during their next event, Concert on the Green, May 14, 2020.
LNC Theatre Department News
Mr. Willets and ten of LNC’s juniors and seniors will be traveling to Louisville, KY February 25 - March 1 for the strongest and broadest network of theatre practitioners in the United States; SETC (Southeastern Theatre Conference). There, they will be auditioning and presenting their technical theatre portfolios for over 166 college representatives, attending workshops, hearing from keynote speakers, observing theatrical performances and much more. We are in hopes that these students will receive scholarships towards a college or university of choice. In December, both 5th-8th grade band and chorus students performed in their annual winter concerts. Congratulations to the students for all their hard work through the first half of the school year. The music was excellent and the musicians truly shone.
A big shout-out of thanks to our 40+ LNC alumni who came out earlier this month for our annual Alumni Lunch and Panel. As always, the advice and insight that our Charter alumni provide our senior class is invaluable and we appreciate their time! As we graduate more classes, our alumni are graduating from college and advancing in their careers so our seniors are now learning about career-life after college as well! Thank you to Mrs. LeighAnn Williams for her leadership in Alumni Relations.

Souperbowl of Caring
49ers Fan? Chiefs fan? We know you are all looking forward to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 2!

Please help the fifth grade students "tackle" hunger with our own Souper Bowl of Caring! Score a few touchdowns by sending in cans and other non-perishable goods for our annual food drive. Food donations will be given to Huntersville Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry to feed needy families right here in our own community! Last year we collected 1,615lbs of food, enough to feed 160 local families. It takes a team......,.

Inclement Weather Policy
In the event of inclement weather, we will announce a decision to cancel or delay the start of school by contacting the local affiliates WSOC (ABC), WBTV (CBS), WCNC (NBC) and they will broadcast our closing information. In addition, we will email and text our parents using the contact information that we have on file for each student, along with posting any information to the LNC2P groups on Schoology. Please note that we do not contact the local news stations in the event that school remains open.

LNC Math Team
Congrats to the LNC 5th grade Math team for a brilliant run in the AreteLab Math Madness tournament. They took 2nd place losing a close battle in the Chamionship Finals (43-41) to Kimberly Lane Elementary out of Plymouth, MN. The team included Joanna Arulijeeva, Aiswarya Arulprakasam, Ji Baiyin, Isaac Grinberg, Elliot James, Pranati Kakani, Hitee Kakarla, Ethan Kidney, Rohan Manargudi, Rian Patel, Tanvi Prabhu, Luke Rossi, Pranika Senthil, Ritika Shah, Amelia Varghese, Alisha Varshney and Aarush Yelimeli. Kudos to the entire team as they have pushed each other all year long. Thank you to Dr. Kendrick for your leadership and knowledge you give to the students.

Congrats to Nikhil Sampath who earned 1st place honors at our school on the AMC 8. In addition, his score of 24 earned him Distinction Honor Roll which is the top 1% in the nation. Also, kudos to Julian Grinberg (score of 22) and Aaron Wang (score of 20) for making the Honor Roll which is the top 5% in the Nation. Additionally, congrats to Aaron Wang (6th grader) and Ji Baiyin (5th grader) for earning Certificates of Achievement for being students in grades 6 and below who scored over a 15.   
8th Grade Photo

MS Spelling Bee
After 8 rounds, and correctly spelling words like Lascaux and transmute, Nikhil Sampath won the opportunity to represent Lake Norman Charter for the THIRD year in a row at the regional spelling bee.

Nikhil represented LNC in the Regional Spelling Bee on January 29. Nikhil came in second place out of 13 competitors. Congratulations to Nikhil and all our spellers!
MS Geography Bee
The 2020 LNC Geography Bee winner is 8th grader Sam Harper who, after several rounds of fierce competition, was the last student standing!

Congratulations to second place winner, 5th grader, TJ Pacitto and all the contestants who made it to the LNC final competition! Good luck to Sam as he moves on the state qualifying test.

Summer Accelerator is a summer program created by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics for exceptional rising 5th-12th grade students. Are you the parent of a MS student and do NOT know how to help them with their math homework? Have you ever thought you needed to go back to school to learn what the students today learn? If so, MS parents are invited to join us for a night that will give you some strategies to make math homework easier for everyone.

Lottery Application for Siblings Is Open
TODAY is the last day to complete the lottery application for the LNC 2020-2021 school year. LNC families who have a child who is NOT currently enrolled but who would like to attend LNC next school year (2020-2021) in grades K-12 can apply.

The lottery application is available here or on the homepage of the LNC website at www.lncharter.org. Because you have a student who currently attends our school, any new application would qualify for "sibling preference." If you have any questions about the process, please contact Ms. Sue Scott, ES Registrar, at lottery@lncharter.org.
Say Something App
This month LNC introduced the “Say Something” app to our 6th-12th grade students. Students were given training on how to appropriately use the app and how to install the app on their school-issued technology as well as their personal devices if applicable and parent-desired. If you have any questions about the app, please visit the Sandy Hook Promise website. 
Safety Town
Do you have a kindergartner coming to LNC in the fall? If so, our very own Safety Resource Officer Bononno would like to invite your child to attend Safety Town. In Safety Town we build a small town complete with roadways, traffic signs and a working traffic light. Students learn the rules of the road and get to ride tricycles around the town for half of their day. The other half of the day is spent learning something from our guest speakers from the fire department, train safety, animal control, Gus the Bus and many others.

Safety Town will be held at the LNC ES gym this summer over two weeks, June 15-18 and June 22-25. Click here if you would like to apply for your child to attend!
