We published our newest hat pattern, Cedar Walk Hat, last week and love the ribbing on this hat.
Ribbing is such an awesome thing. One stitch -- the knit stitch -- is paired with another stitch -- a purl -- and the whole temperament of the fabric changes.
Ribbing pulls in.
It tightens.
It allows for a snugger fit.
When knitting a hat, it is the perfect way to get a hat to cling to the ears. When ribbing is doubled, as in the Cedar Walk Hat, the two layers create warmth that keeps out the cold. It's like a turtleneck for your ears
Ribbing tighten the bottoms of sleeves and sweaters so that they shape to the body.
Ribbing lets a fabric have shape and form; the cuffs of mittens cling follow the wrist and slide under a jacket sleeve so that wind stays out and warmth stays in.
While some say their favorite ribbing is K1, P1 — often called 1 by 1 ribbing — others gravitate toward the accordion fold look and feel of a 2 by 2 ribbing — K2, P2.
Whichever ribbing you like, sing it’s praises! Ribbing is a wonder of knitting.
