Greetings!
We are excited to welcome our next guest, fiber enthusiast Cecilia Nelson-Hurt to Fiberside Chats this Sunday, February 20th.
|
|
Known to many as Creative Ceci she is is not only a diversity, equity, and inclusion practitioner for a major global company; she is also a passionate knitter who blends her love of creating spaces to discuss diversity and her love of knitting and travel seamlessly on social media and in real life.
Having traveled around the world and visited more than 175 yarn shops, Cecilia has discovered that it's "our common threads" that knit us together. Ceci will share her favorite travel experiences where she’s learned every yarn shop around the globe is a community where we can always belong, even if you don’t know the language.
|
|
Thinking about this upcoming chat sparked my reflection about our our LYS community and what might be the experience of a new guest traveling to visit our shoppe?
Daily I see staff and customers welcoming travelers and showing them the LYS ropes, supporting new students, celebrating finished objects and collaborating to suggest ideas about yarn, color, pattern and design choices. I believe we are practicing the LYS Manifesto crafted with the help our our community in 2014 and hope that all of our new and current customers believe that as well.
The Manifesto is our North Star guiding our actions each day, but like everything in life, we know there is always room for improvement.
|
|
I will be in the front row of this chat, taking notes and looking for opportunities to make LYS even better at welcoming all. We hope you'll join us as well for a candid conversation with Ceci on how she "knits the world" in both her professional and crafting world this Sunday at Fiberside Chats!
And, we welcome your thoughts about how we can make LYS as inclusive and welcoming as possible.

FO "Pro Tips" from staff, teachers
& makers!
|
|
Each week are sharing pro tips from the LYS staff, teachers and you, our makers, on how to make FO February a success, starting now!
We are still collecting your pro tips and this one from Valerie is a great one!
One thing I find that works for me (as does in most of my 'making' hobbies)- check my mood before knitting. If I am not in a good place (i.e. having a rough day, or just not feeling inspired- or like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's- having the "Mean Reds"), I won't knit. I found if I am not in the right mood, then I make more mistakes and end up transferring that energy to the piece I am working on and just don't enjoy my knitting time.
I make sure I am settled, and in a 'neutral' mood, then it seems my knitting goes smoother, I enjoy my knitting time, and less mistakes are made.
Also, a nice adult beverage helps to relax me and make my knitting seem effortless. 😉 ~ Valerie V.
Thank you to Valerie for sharing your tip - I bet many can relate!
You too can reply to this email to send in YOUR PRO TIP! How do you get your projects DONE? We want to know and share it with our community!

Happy Wednesday and Happy Handwork from all of us to all of you!
Gail, Melanie, Theresa, Cheryl, Christianna, Mary Ann, Hannah, and of course Bandit too.....

While Boulder County is lifting the Mask Mandate on Friday February 18th Longmont Yarn Shoppe will continue to require all guests wear a well fitting mask during your in person visit.
If you cannot wear a mask due to a medical condition please call the shop or email info@longmontyarn.com to arrange for a private appointment before or after shop hours.
The safety of our staff, teachers and the community along with the science as I review it are what has guided my decisions about COVID precautions at LYS in the past and ongoing. Our policies and practices are constantly being reviewed and considered.
Please be kind to the staff regarding our policies and bring any concerns about this directly to me. Thank you for your ongoing support as we navigate the COVID - coaster. ~ Gail

This weeks in-person classes!

These simple projects take your beginning knitting to the next level. If you know how to cast on and knit you’re ready to make a garment!
Students can choose to knit a shawl, cowl, or hat and will learn purl stitch, ribbing, increases and decreases, seaming, circular knitting, and all techniques appropriate to the pattern chosen. Class meets twice and kicks off February 17th! More details here!
|
|
This hat is perfect for the cold winter ahead and is perfect for the newish knitter who knows how to cast on and do the knit stitch. Choose from 4 different brim variations when making your hat. All styles are quick and easy to knit and even more fun to felt!
Use of our Wonder Washer is available to students who don't own a top loading washer.

One of our most popular classes, everyone who learns stranded knitting becomes addicted to this technique. Put some pizazz in your knitting with color work! You'll be saying "just one more row" too! This is an in person class.
|
|
This is the perfect "stick your toe in the water" lace class.
Knit in the round, this cowl is made using sport wt yarn with a 7 stitch lace repeat, and every other row is a rest/knit row!
This class will prepare you for other lace adventures like Whitmoor Sweater shown below!
Don't be afraid of lace! We've got your back!
|
|
Whether you have knit socks before or not, this class is for you. We will work from an easy Basic Sock pattern and learn about the construction of a top down sock from casting on to heel flap, turning the heel, picking up for the gusset, and grafting the toe. Then we will discuss how to avoid the dreaded "second sock syndrome". Join us for fun and adventure in "Sock Land".

Why Weave? The better question is "Why not weave?" Weaving is a fabulous way to work through an abundant stash as most yarns used for knitting & crochet can readily be used on a Rigid Heddle loom to craft scarves, table runner or garments. Plus you can knock out a scarf in a few hours! Weaving is meditative and rhythmic too!
In this class Sara will introduce you to the power of the rigid heddle loom! She will cover weaving terminology, how to set up the loom and of course how to weave.
During class we will create a variety of fabrics and textures using plain weave and pick up stick patterns. By the end of the class you will be able to warp and weave on the rigid heddle loom on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who has been wanting to learn how to weave but has not been sure where to start!
Don't own a loom? No worries! Rent your loom from LYS and should you decide weaving is your sport your loom rental fee can be applied to your loom purchase! More details and sign up link can be found here!

What one student shared about last weeks class with Melissa: I really enjoyed Melissa's class on Friday. The double sided cables are really cool and Melissa is a ray of sunshine. I’m looking forward to her next classes. Tanya G.

In Person Classes in late February
& early March...
|
|
Our snowy February in Colorado requires some great hand protection from the elements!
These mittens will work up fast and you'll learn a few things in the process. This mitten class is perfectly simplistic without lacking in the best features.
Written for most yarn weights, choose anything from fingering weight to bulky. Grab a workhorse yarn for durability or an indulgent yarn for something a little extra luxurious.
|
|
|
Whitmoor Sweater (In Person) is perfect in a DK wt yarn, or you can choose a mohair lace and fingering wt yarn held together.
Either way this top down sweater will be one you reach for again and again with its simple yet elegant lace yoke and easy fit.
Class meets 3 times under the guidance of Christie Nielsen with a show and tell in April. Her sweater knitting experience will come in handy for all students!
Sign up early and ensure your perfect yarn choice is on hand or can be ordered. Registration and class details are here!

COVID Precautions for In Person Classes and Community Gatherings
|
|
For now we have regrettably made the decision to cancel in person community gatherings including Weave In, Spin In, Tuesday Community Handwork, Punch Hook Punch, and Casual Crochet until further notice.
As we have requested for the past few months, all staff and guests shall wear properly fitting masks over nose and mouth while in the shop and practice social distancing.
Beginning January 1st we require that all students participating in our in person classes and private lessons be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID 19 and show proof of vaccination at the start of class. All LYS staff & teachers are fully vaccinated and boosted.
As always, we ask if you have any signs of illness you not enter the shop. Curbside pick and online shopping is always an option.
Thank you for your understanding and support. If you have any questions please contact me directly: gail@longmontyarn.com
